Senior Technologist - FLOW
Performs routine and moderate to complex tests and analyses according to established procedures in designated technical department. Evaluates new procedures or methods under direct supervision of department supervisor or group leader. Assists in training and orientation of personnel as assigned. Performs routine processing of bone marrow, peripheral blood, tissue and body fluid cells for flow cytometric analysis. Performs microscopic analysis of stained smears, acquisition and analysis of listmode files. Also prepares solutions and reagents, maintains laboratory records and performs general laboratory maintenance. Provides guidance to laboratory personnel; may organize daily work flow. Ability to analyze and present data and/or information to all laboratories. Skill Requirements: Administrative: Answer telephones, maintain logs/records, organizational skills, proficiency with numbers, research information, time management, train employees, use computerized databases, written and verbal communications. Machine: Personal computer. Physical Demands: Speech clarity, utilization of fingers and hands, standing-remaining on one’s feet in an upright position, sitting-remaining in the normal seated position, handling-seizing, holding, grasping. Moderate physical effort (up to 30 pounds); must comply with applicable safety procedures. Working Conditions: Possible exposure to infection from disease-bearing specimens; regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases; must comply with applicable safety procedures. Vision Requirements: Far acuity-ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more; near acuity-ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less; depth perception-ability to judge distance and space relationships; color vision-ability to distinguish and identify different colors. Essential duties includes but is not limited to: Performs routine processing of bone marrow, peripheral blood, tissue and body fluid cells for flow cytometric acquisition and analysis. Performs microscopic analysis of stained smears and acquisition and analysis of listmode files. Assists in filing of slides and reports. Reports problems concerning individual cases, tests, equipment and supplies to laboratory supervisor or lead technologist to ensure timely resolution. Prepares and aliquots solutions and reagents for laboratory procedures as directed in the procedure manual. Records required information in laboratory log books, specimen accession sheets, work flow drafts, etc., to ensure quality assurance of specimens. Performs various housekeeping and/or maintenance tasks to keep laboratory areas and equipment in clean and operable condition. Informs supervisor of supplies needed. Monitors equipment; reports any malfunctions to lead technologist or supervisor. May be required to perform specialized testing to ensure quality control. Assists in training other employees to properly perform job duties. Handles all confidential patient information appropriately. Learns new technology and applies it to laboratory procedures. Performs all aspects of laboratory procedures following safety guidelines and adhering to protocols in the US Labs laboratory manual. Performs other related duties as assigned. Monitors problem cases to ensure a timely resolution. May organize cases to be analyzed by laboratory personnel if directed to do so by a lead or supervisor. Provides guidance to laboratory personnel in identifying, analyzing and solving problems concerning individual cases, tests performed and equipment malfunctions. May review cases for quality assurance purposes. May participate in special projects requiring data collection, analysis and presentation of conclusions. Job Requirements: This position requires a Medical Technologist Degree or equivalent and city/state licenses or permits to qualify as a Technologist w/4+ years of experience in a Clinical Laboratory. Must meet CLIA requirements. Bachelor's degree. Required Major in Chemical, Physical, or Biological Sciences. Desired Major in Biological Science. California State Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) licensure required. Extensive flow cytometry experience with emphasis on leukemia phenotyping; 6-8 years color flow immunophenotyping; FCS express, FC50, and FACSCAND express a plus. CA: California State Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) licensure required. Beginner knowledge of Internet Software. Demonstrates training, troubleshooting, problem solving and project management skills. Beginner knowledge of Microsoft spreadsheet software and word processing software Microsoft Word. Intermediate level in Flow Cytometry Operating Software and Listmode Analysis Software.Skills required: Understanding of Immunological and normal and abnormal Hematological Theory.
