Pharmacy Director

The Pharmacy Director serves Baylor Clinic and Hospital Pharmacy

patients by overseeing all pharmacy operations including planning,

coordinating, monitoring and supervising activities in the hospital and

outpatient pharmacy according to hospital policies, professional

pharmacy practice standards, and State and Federal laws. The Pharmacy

Director recommends improvements in the practices and operations of the

pharmacy to hospital administration, and implements jointly established

initiatives. The Pharmacy Director has the ability to demonstrate

initiative, set priorities, act decisively, and respond to concerns, and

furthermore has the ability to work in collaboration with other members

of the hospital and pharmacy staff.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The Pharmacy Director, in collaboration with Baylor Clinic and Hospital

administration, will advise and make critical decisions affecting the

creation, design, policies, and workflows of the forthcoming hospital

pharmacy. In addition, the Director:

 

•  Ensures skilled, safe, and proficient delivery of pharmacy

services and pharmaceutical information to Baylor Clinic and Hospital

patients and physicians.

•  Measures and assesses operations on a continuing basis, is

familiar with and implements continuous process improvement, ensuring

quality, safety, and efficiency in the hospital setting in a

collaborative and collegial manner.

•  Develops systems which enhance safety of the medication

administration cycle

•  Develops monitoring and reporting metrics which meet current and

prospective national quality standards

•  Ensures that the Baylor Clinic and Hospital meets all Joint

Commission and regulatory requirements

•  Sets the scope of services and collaborates with Hospital

Administration to assemble projects and initiatives that promote the

Hospital’s strategic objectives.

•  Works with the medical staff and develops a robust Pharmacy and

Therapeutics Committee to develop and manage:

o  The pharmacy formulary;

o  The pipeline of future pharmacologic agents

o  Effective and proactive policies for prescribing and

administration of pharmacologic agents.

•  Makes certain the pharmacy and its staff adhere to Hospital

policies and procedures, as well as applicable industry best practices,

including time management, inventory control, and accuracy of practice.

•  Institutes and supervises budget controls, monitors expenses and

revenues, and prepares annual budgets;

•  Further creates effective mechanisms for managing pharmacy costs,

including Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee effectiveness, policy

development and management, effective monitoring of the drug pipeline

and access to free agents for charity care patients.

•  Creates a pharmacy staffing plan, and maintains appropriate

staffing levels, including recruiting, advancement, and establishment

and assignment of compensation levels; also oversees performance reviews

and salary adjustments;

•  Encourages staff to seek individual professional growth and

development, and to meet the requirements of mandatory and/or continuing

education; fosters skills competency, and serves as a preceptor, mentor,

and resource to pharmacy staff;

•  Works with the IT and EMR teams to develop sound inventory

control practices and dispensation workflows through effective and

efficient use of the EMR and other technological resources;

•  Stays abreast of advancing contemporary technology to support

state-of-the-art patient care;

•  Promotes a spirit of collaboration and transparency with

physicians, establishes lines of communication with the medical staff

and other hospital constituents to seek input and feedback;

•  Keeps abreast industry developments, responds by designing

innovative delivery systems and other pharmacy methods while ensuring

compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and accreditations;

•  Oversees management and supervision of a full investigational

pharmacy program;

•  Participates on project work teams and other hospital committees

as assigned.

 

PERFORMANCE MEASURES

 

•  Ability to meet or exceed goals and targets as set by the Vice

President of  Clinics and Hospital Operations and/or BCH CEO

•  Attaining a high level of initiative and accomplishment during

Hospital startup phase, and further adding value by seeking out,

planning, and achieving performance improvement initiatives

•  Achievement of budget objectives for areas of responsibility

•  Success in creating and maintaining a safe and compliant pharmacy

environment and pharmaceutical delivery system, especially as measured

during accreditation or other regulatory reviews

•  Recruitment and retention of competent, skilled pharmacists,

pharmacy supervisors, and other staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education:

•  Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy.

•  Doctor of Pharmacy.

 

Experience:

•  Minimum of ten years of experience in a hospital pharmacy,

preferably in an academic teaching hospital.

•  Minimum of five years in a hospital pharmacy management role.

•  Previous experience as a hospital Director of Pharmacy strongly

preferred.

•  Experience in an academic medical center will be highly valued.

 

Licensure: Must be licensed or eligible for licensing by the Texas State

Board of Pharmacy.
