PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY: Assist the pathologist in the performance of autopsy procedures and maintain the morgue in a state of readiness for autopsy procedures.

 

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Preparation of body for autopsy.

• Fingerprinting.

• Taking photographs as directed.

• Cleaning or disrobing body.

• Dissection of organs as directed.

• Preparation of specimens.

• Suturing of body.

• Cleaning as required.

• Routing maintenance of equipment used in the performance of autopsies.

• Ordering and restocking of supplies.

• Maintaining necessary forms.

• Filing and securing radiographs used in autopsy procedures.

• Completing office and laboratory forms.

• May assist with routine death investigations as directed by the investigative staff, if required to do so and time permits in light of other duties.

 

REQUIREMENTS

• Experience – Previous experience as an autopsy assistant is preferable, but not essential.

• Education – Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Science or Mortuary Science, or any other relevant field of study (as determined by the Coroner). Training in CNA Program or Paramedical EMT. *May be waived in lieu of experience as determined by the Coroner.

• License or Certificate – Must pass a background check. Must have a valid driver’s license.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl and regularly lift, push or pull 100 pounds (occasionally required to lift 200 pounds or over).

• Pathology work is performed in the autopsy room at the Coroner’s Office.

• Exposure to harmful chemicals and fumes, foul odors, confining work space and other undesirable conditions is common.

• Use of precautionary measures to avoid possible exposure to communicable diseases is required.

• Must be able to lift/assist in lifting/transport bodies from location to location as deemed necessary.

 

HOURS: Employee will work up to 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
