MEDICAL ASSISTANT / OFFICE NURSE

MAJOR FUNCTION:
Provides quality nursing care to all Family Medicine of Albemarle (FMOA) patients in a professional and courteous manner. Performs diagnostic testing as requested by the physician.

SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.        Escort patients to exam room preparing them for exam.
2.        Responsible for administering medications, wound care and phlebotomy as requested by the physician, maintaining accurate records and providing patients with appropriate instructions and/or educational material.
3.        Call pharmacies with prescriptions requested by physician and maintain records of same.
4.        Enforces policy of maintaining accurate records of distribution of controlled medications.
5.        Operates and maintains diagnostic/medical equipment. Monitors and arranges for the preventative maintenance to assure effective equipment operation.
6.        Demonstrates competency in performing and reporting results of requested laboratory tests in an accurate manner to physician and patient.
7.        Prepares specimens for dispatch to reference laboratories as needed.
8.        Keep work areas and exam room orderly, clean and well stocked; reorder supplies as needed.
9.        Make necessary referrals for patients as instructed by the physician.
10.      Displays competence in that the appropriate instruments are sterilized and available on a daily basis.
11.      Promotes good public relations by interacting with all parties and/or facilities in a courteous and effective manner.
12.      Develops and recommends any new and/or revised policies which are necessary to enhance the practice's ability to provide quality patient care.
13.      Reviews patient's medical record prior to appointment and obtains any missing reports or lab results.

· Ability to appropriately screen calls to physicians.
· Ability to set priorities and triage multiple requests.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Â
I.        Education:       High school graduate or equivalent. Successful completion of accredited practical nursing or Medical Assistant program.
Â
II.       Licenses/Certifications: Licensed to practice in the State of Virginia as a Medical Assistant or Practical Nurse.
Â
III.      Experience: 1-2 years experience in a physician office desired.
Â
IV.      Age Specific Competencies:
           The MA/LPN must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients in his or her practice. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the practice policies and procedures manual.

           · Ability to work quickly and accurately, juggling multiple tasks.

           Annual competence will be determined through the performance evaluation program and will include CPR certification, if applicable.
