Laboratory Technician D
Job Description: Responsible for surgical specimen collection, labeling and accessioning, as well as preparation of reagents for distribution. Filing and retrieval of blocks and slides, and maintenance of adequate supply inventory. Other responsibilities as assigned. 1. Picks up surgical specimens from operating and procedure rooms three times daily during shift. Provides additional pickup as needed. 2. Immediately accessions specimens into TAMTRON, always matching patient information in requisition with that on specimen label. In case of discrepancy, notifies supervisor and returns specimen to point of origin for correction. Ensures that same-type tissues are not accessioned consecutively, and that specimen integrity and identification are not compromised. Makes certain all specimen parts submitted are accounted for, with numerical identification for each specimen accurately labeled and frozen section entries matched with corresponding gross specimens. 3. Prepares buffered formalin and formic acid reagents and dispenses them into containers for distribution. Dates chemicals when received and shelves them appropriately. Disposes chemical waste and other biohazards. Works with toxic chemicals and biohazards in accordance with established safe practices. 4. Files and retrieves blocks and slides. Shelves and maintains adequate inventory of inhouse supplies. Washes glassware; delivers formalin containers to clinics and operating rooms; maintains Xylene recycling equipment. 5. Delivers and collects departmental mail from the mailroom. Distributes mail to individual boxes.6. Follows department, laboratory and personnel safety guidelines. 7. Informs supervisor of any issues that are beyond own knowledge and responsibility. 8. Expedites other responsibilities assigned by supervisory staff as required.Job Qualifications: Minimum Required Education High School/GED Minimum Required Experience 0-1 year Preferred Experience 1-2 years
