Laboratory Coordinator

Job Description: Performs technical laboratory testing to facilitate optimum patient care in accordance with Lab policy and procedure, and FDA, CAP, OSHA, CLIA, and JCAHO regulations. Primary Duties and Responsibilities 1. Performs technical laboratory testing to facilitate optimum patient care in accordance with Lab policy and procedure, and FDA, CAP, OSHA, CLIA, and JCAHO regulations. 2. Acts with minimal supervision to determine acceptability of specimens and results. Determines when manual verification of automated results is appropriate. Documents unacceptable specimens and verifies results according to appropriate policy. Communicates directly with patient care physician or nurse regarding problems or delays. 3. Maintains QA policies and procedures to ensure validity of results. Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results and takes appropriate action according to predetermined protocols. 4. Performs and reviews quality control for all testing before patient results are released. Submits and analyzes monthly QA records, and schedules instrument calibrations as needed. 5. Maintains a safe and efficient working environment by performing equipment checks, calibration, cleaning work area, and monitoring temperatures in accordance with regulatory agencies and hospital policies. Recognizes and troubleshoots malfunctions of advanced technological equipment and initiates corrective action. 6. Organizes laboratory work-flow to assure rapid turn around times. 7. Enters test results into the Laboratory Information System. 8. Maintains laboratory supplies and reagents. Informs appropriate personnel of department supply needs ensuring uninterrupted testing. Orders reagents via purchase order. 9. Attends various meetings regarding safety and Quality Control issues to keep informed of current lab and hospital safety policies. 10. Maintains high degree of clinical competency and professional knowledge by reading relevant journal articles and attending training sessions. 11. Acts in a supervisory capacity, when a supervisor is not on site. 12. Contacts ancillary employees to obtain specimens, patient information or physician requests. Communicates information such as test results, normal ranges and specimen requirements to authorized sources.
