Fire Safety Manager
Job Description: Plans, directs and controls the MSSM Fire Safety program. Works with subordinates in ensuring that all fire equipment is in good operating condition, that structural conditions and equipment prevent, contain or retard the inception of fire or its growth. Duties and Responsibilities Oversees inspection of sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, fire extinguishers, exit lights, emergency lights, exit ways, exit stairs, line chutes, etc., on a monthly basis. Conducts special inspection, surveys and tests in order to determine degree of risk, dangers, and possible solutions. Oversees testing of all fire alarm systems, fire extinguishing systems and gas alarms on a daily, monthly or quarterly basis. Responds to all fire alarms, malfunctions, assorted alarm problems and investigates gas smells. leaks, burning odors, etc. Keeps records on all fires and major incidents including causes, losses and operations. Conducts ongoing orientation and inservices on fire safety and other training sessions when necessary.Chairs committees of Hospital Evacuation Task Force and writes, edits and updates fire safety plan. Committee writes policies and procedures for operation and maintenance of fire equipment and fire safety rules for departments. Interviews, trains, schedules, assigns work and when necessary, disciplines subordinates. Evaluates work of subordinates and counsels on work performance. Makes recommendations to Director on hiring and discharge. Makes recommendations to Director on type, extent and expense of automatic fire extinguishing systems and alarm equipment for installation as necessary. Oversees emergency repairs, the need for adjustment, alterations, and improvements to existing alarms and extinguishing equipment. Researches codes and regulations of NIOSH, Occupational Safety Health Act, State Health, New York City Fire Department, etc., and ensures that the institution is fully compliant. Represents Plant Operation and Maintenance by serving on SFPE, BCSP.
