Chief, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service

Provide a wide range of onsite services in all areas of the general laboratory including but not limited to Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Surgical Pathology, Cytology, and Autopsy service.

 

The candidate will be expected to work in close cooperation with the Medical Director of services and to participate in some administrative tasks.

 

Clinical:

The candidate will be expected to carry out approximately the following clinical work:

  Gross and microscopic surgical examinations: 10 – 20 surgical accessions 3 – 4 days per week including but not limited to the above stated specialties active at the hospital. Up to one frozen section, cytology, or intra-operative examination per week including but not limited to touch preps as well as dissection examination of kidney biopsies. Microscopic examinations on 5 – 10 urine specimens per day 3 – 4 days per week. Microscopic examinations of 1 – 2 peripheral smears per day. Autopsy prosection: up to 1 – 2 times per month on average. Clinical review and oversite of therapeutic phlebotomy on a routine basis. General consultation of and support to all areas of the laboratory as necessary. Routine professional interaction with physicians, nurses, administrators, technologists, and patients.

Risk, Quality, and Resource Management

The Candidate will be expected to participate fully in:

Ongoing surgical and cytopathology review of and by the medical director. Routine proficiency testing via CAP, AFIP, and other deemed institutions. AFIP Systematic external review of surgicals [SERS]. Required VA continuing education in areas of business integrity, information security, sexual harassment, safety, and patient confidentiality. Timely communication of malignant and clinically significant diagnoses to physicians. Voluntary consultation with specialty consultants on difficult and complex cases. Share in preparing and giving bimonthly Tumor Board diagnostic presentations. Quarterly Grand Rounds and/or Mortality and Morbidity meetings. Utilization review of monitored laboratory services to submitting primary care providers (e.g. blood transfusion utilization). Participation in preparation for various regulatory inspections both internal and external. Participation in approximately 50 hours of accredited CME provided per year.

 

You must have a valid, active, unrestricted license from any US state, territory in order to be considered for this position.

The candidate will have successfully completed a residency in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, be AP/CP board certified, be licensed in at least one state and have at least five years of practice experience within at least one year at a medium sized or larger hospital. 

Must hold a medical degree. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position.Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.

Elligible candidates may qualify for the Educational Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).

 

Travel and Transportation Expenses may be authorized for this position, including guaranteed home buyout (GHBO).  GHBO is reserved for eligible candidates and subject to final approval by the VISN 1 Network Director.

 

You will be required to serve a probationary period of 2 years.
