SUMMARY:
The Coordinator, in collaboration with and direction from the Director Surgical Services, is responsible for the management of day-to-day operation of the Central Sterile Supply Reprocessing (CSSR). The Coordinator facilitates ordering and receiving instrumentation, record keeping, and instrument processing and case cart preparation and delivery. The position also requires assisting in developing, updating and maintaining policies and procedures in accordance with the Joint Commission, AAMI, AORN, and OSHA guidelines to ensure proper cleaning, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instrumentation and CSSR supplies. The Coordinator supervises the CSSR staff. The Coordinator reports to the Director Surgical Services. .

The Coordinator shares the responsibility of the Surgical Services department in the absence of the Director with other coordinators..
Instrument Processing:
The Coordinator ensures the timely processing and delivery of instrumentation to the Operating Room and Clinic areas. This is evidence by:
1. Ensuring instruments are cleaned, assembled, sterilized, stored, and distributed according to departmental policies and procedures that support regulatory agencies.
2. Collaborating with OR Coordinator and Team Leaders to update procedure-specific pick lists and tray lists used to prepare for scheduled surgical procedures. Standardizes terminology to increase picking accuracy.
3. Notifying OR Coordinator of potential instrument and supply shortages, and works with Materials Management to obtain alternative products as needed.
4. Investigating, reporting and resolving case cart instrument and supply variances.
5. Supervising daily activities of CSSR Supervisors and Lead Technicians..
6. Working collaboratively with Materials Management staff to contact vendors, as needed, to check status of open instrument/equipment orders, pricing and new product information.
7. Establishing routine instrument maintenance schedules; ensuring routine maintenance of prime department equipment including sterilizers, instrument washers, ultrasonic cleaner and cart washer [if applicable]..
8. Arranging for instrument and equipment repair.
9. Maintaining department records on staff orientation, training, annual performance evaluations, tardiness, attendance, meetings and CSSR reports.
10. Arranging in-service and provides training for staff development.
Human Resource Management
The Coordinator is responsible for facilitating, stimulating and evaluating human resources to provide quality, cost efficient processing and supply service to the Operating Room as evidenced by:
1. Staffing the department to meet operational requirements based on resources available and the daily OR operative schedule.
2. Documentation and communications of staff performance with recommendations for quality, growth and development of goals.
3. Interdisciplinary collaboration to foster staff development.
4. Development of the CSSR staffing schedule to provide a fiscally sound and safe staffing pattern, which meets department needs. Analyzes trends and identifies problems.
5. Conducting informational staff meetings to provide a positive environment conducive to change in instrument processing technology.
6. Identifying staff educational needs and working with the department Director to provide training.
7. Identifying and resolving service-related issues.
8. Promote staff certification within first year of employment and assist with compliance of processing standards.
9. Respect for MetroWest Medical Center policies and procedures including union contracts and standards of practice [where applicable]
10. Participates in staff recruitment and retention.
11. Conducting disciplinary action with respect to personnel, and policies and procedures.
12. Creates and processes instrument orders.
13. Reviews employee attendance on an ongoing basis.
Financial Management
The Coordinator effectively utilized resources to develop cost efficient delivery of high quality service as evidenced by:
1. Provide high quality service to the OR through cost effective management of department staffing, instrumentation and supplies
2. Encourage staff to participate in development of cost-effective ideas and plans.
3. Assist in the development of CSSR capital and operational budget.
4. Develops CSSR staffing and scheduling to maximize personnel talent and potential.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
1. Formal training in health care, business, or materials management obtained through college credits.
2. Recent experience with and knowledge of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment, and familiarity with surgical procedures to effectively plan operational activities.
3. Thorough understanding of decontamination and sterilization processes.
4. Strong organizational skills to effectively coordinate the efforts of support staff.
5. Analytical ability to maintain records, investigates variances, evaluate and resolve problems.
6. Computer skills necessary for systems used for communication, documentation and reports.
QUALIFICATIONS - EDUCATION
1. Bachelor degree, preferred.
2. CRCST Certification and annual renewal
QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE
A minimum of two years progressively more responsible experience in operating room setting or similar positioned to include practical experience in aseptic technique, instrumentation, surgical procedures, sterile processing and materials management.
Supervisory experience in sterile processing environment required.
Computer experience required.
