GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Responsible for the daily technical supervision of the Hematology Laboratory under the guidance of the Technical Director. Works independently, following established hospital and department guidelines.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides leadership and direction for the operation of the routine Hematology Laboratory and/or the specialty areas (Special Coagulation, Flow Cytometry, and Special Hematology) to assure timely and efficient service according to established standards.

2. Provides assistance to the technical staff in handling workload and determining priorities.

3. Troubleshoots and resolves all technical and employee problems with the help of the Technical Director, if necessary.

4. Reviews patient and quality control results for accuracy and completeness.

5. Maintains, calibrates, and troubleshoots all laboratory equipment.

6. Develops and maintains schedules and work assignments for laboratory staff.

7. Evaluates and updates laboratory procedures, revising and reviewing procedure manuals as required.

8. Responsible for training Medical Technology staff, clinical students and clinical pathology residents. Communicates department and hospital policy to the staff.

9. In collaboration with the Technical Director, and following established laboratory and hospital guidelines, evaluates, counsels, and disciplines employees.

10. Establishes quality control assay values and standard deviations according to established protocols. Maintains and reviews all quality control records.

11. Participates in internal and external continuing education programs. Keeps current regarding developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in Hematology.

12. Participates in the research, development, and implementation of laboratory procedures.

13. Follows all safety, infection control, and OSHA guidelines and policies.

14. Recommends and participates in quality improvement initiatives.

15. Performs all other duties of a Medical Technologist as required.

 

Requirements

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university.

2. ASCP certification.

3. Three years of Hematology Laboratory experience.
