MENTAL HEALTH NURSE PART-TIME, REGULAR (RN, LVN, LPT)
THE POSITION
Under general supervision, to provide mental health nursing services, instruction, education and assessments in clinics and community facilities; to assist with prevention and alleviation of mental illness and promote mental health; to coordinate and participate in a variety of mental health nursing assessments, direct patient care, group and individual medication and health education; and to do related work as required. This position is located at the Behavioral Health Department.

?? Plans, organizes and provides mental health nursing services
Â
?? Provides health and mental health education to individuals and their families regarding mental illness, health conditions, health maintenance, and rehabilitation in clinic, day treatment, or community settings
Â
?? Implements client’s medical care plans as developed and prescribed within the Behavioral Health Department guidelines and policies
Â
?? Serves as team member in the development, implementation, and evaluation of direct client care
Â
?? Interviews, educates, informs, and refers clients regarding a variety of health conditions
Â
 ?? Develops regular and special treatments and procedures
Â
?? Observes and evaluates clients’ signs, symptoms, and therapy progress
Â
?? Identifies and interprets client findings or changes requiring attention or notification of other professional staff
Â
?? Assists with special treatment, tests, and administration of prescribed medications
Â
?? Makes adjustments under physician direction in patient care, commensurate with a patient’s condition and progress
Â
?? Provides basic assessments and educational information to clients
Â
?? Informs and educates clients regarding mental health status, treatment plans, psychoactive medications, benefits and side effects of medications, disease prevention, and basic living skills

?? Provides health education regarding personal hygiene, nutrition, and care and treatment of health problems
Â
?? Teaches and demonstrates client care to family members and others
Â
?? Consults with other mental health staff regarding health care issues and client treatment plans
Â
?? Administers injections
Â
?? Accepts medication orders from licensed physician, MD’s and maintains accurate inventory of medications and stores them in a secure area

?? Maintains a variety of client health and medication records
Â
?? Refers individuals and families to appropriate agencies and clinics, as necessary
Â
?? Conducts health appraisals and follows-up on findings
Â
?? Confers with physicians, other professionals, and concerned parties regarding the needs of clients with mental disabilities

?? Prepares reports and maintains records for treatment, client appraisals, and development of treatment plans
Â

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Â
- Principles, techniques and methods used in providing patient education.
Â
- Principles, methods, and practices of general and psychiatric nursing.
Â
- Medical terminology.
Â
- Community resources available for support of individuals in various levels of care.
Â
- Normal and abnormal growth and development patterns.
Â
- Federal, State, and local laws and regulations governing the prescribing, administering and dispensing of medications.

- Causes, means of transmission, and methods of controlling communicable diseases.

Ability to:

- Provide a variety of general and mental health nursing services.

- Develop and maintain cooperative, constructive relationships with families of clients, members of other professional disciplines, social agencies, and other staff.

Â
Training and Experience:
Completion of nursing studies and curriculum sufficient to obtain requisite licenses from the State of California.
Two years of nursing experience working in a healthcare setting. Experience should involve responsibility for the administration of medications, storage of medications, and key responsibility for the maintenance of inventory of medications.
Special Requirements: Possession of a license as a Registered Nurse, Licensed Vocational Nurse, or Licensed Psychiatric Technician.
The professional license possessed should be valid and current with the prospective California Licensing entity for that professional discipline. Please attach copy to application.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California Driver's License.
Desirable Qualifications: Bilingual skills in English/Spanish is highly desirable.

Level II - $2357.50 - $3009/mo
