General Summary: With limited supervision, no instructions on routine work and general instructions for new lines of work or special assignments, the composite lay-up worker applies layers of impregnated cloth or prepreg onto mold or fixture in predetermined ply sequence, and presses cloth to fit contours of mold, smooth surface, and remove air pockets and excess resin, using squeegee, scraper, or spatula. Worker manages own time and achieves desired results by effectively planning, prioritizing and performing large/complex tasks. Does Not work with wet layup or metal bonding. Duties and Responsibilities: o Fits and laps ends of cloth, using scissors or knife. o Encases laminate in bagging material and bleeder cloth, attaches vacuum bagging apparatus, such as thermocouples, probes, and vacuum connections, to mold or bonding fixture, and exhausts air from vacuum bag to seal laminate for curing. o Uses a squeegee or other tools to lay up materials o Forms materials to molds using hands, squeegees, and heat guns. o Positions pre-preg fabric on tools using work instructions and locating templates rubs fabric with squeegee to remove air bubbles. o Applies additional layers of pre-preg materials to build up specific number of laminations per work order. o Trims edges of laminated fabric, using scissors or knife. o Vacuum Bagging of parts per work instructions. o After laminate construction is completed all parts are identified with part number and serial number.o Lay up is covered using a layer of release film FEP over entire laminate. o Using high temperature tape to seal edge of FEP followed by a layer of breather material. o Minimum of 2 Thermal couple wires are installed to record Part temperature. o Using high temperature chromate tape and bagging film to cover entire laminate place minimum of 2 vacuum ports. o Perform leak check to bago Perform physical and environmental checks and document the work performed. o Inspect work o Responsible for trimming, cleaning and preparing tools for lay up. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Knowledge on using a wide variety of manual and power tools such as scissors, cutters, vises, measuring instruments such as tape measurers and rulers. Physical Demands/Working Conditions/Environment: Eye/hand coordination. Ability to distinguish colors. Ability to grasp and use a variety of hand tools, and /or machinery in performing assigned duties. Ability to tolerate non-toxic levels of exposures to substances such as solvents, glues, epoxy and other agents. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. Able to lift 5 to 40 lbs. Able to push and pull 5 to 50 lbs. Ability to stay on schedule and meet specified standards and/ or production requirements. Ability to concentrate on a routine task. Ability to remember and follow detailed instructions. Ability to handle quick changes of assignments. Ability to be flexible and adapt to changes in priorities. Ability to perform job responsibilities in a reasonable amount of time. Working environment in the production/shop and clean room area.
