We ask that you have expertise in at least ONE of the following areas—but are willing and interested in learning all areas:
Design Standards
Research, develop, review, approve, and assist with production and implementation of reference material, rules, and standards used by Seattle City Light's engineers to design the T&D system. Develop and maintain web based engineering tools used by Seattle City Light's engineers, such as, pulling calculations, service fault calculations, and voltage drops. Develop and maintain engineering forms, such as, work orders, job orders, easements, and street use permits. Coordinate revisions to Client Assistant Memos (CAMs) and city-wide drafting standards. Advise and consult city agencies on new and existing Seattle City Light standards. Monitor, maintain, and share knowledge of changes in national, state, and local building and safety codes; provide code interpretation upon request. Monitor, maintain, and share knowledge of departmental and franchise advisories. Maintain peer contacts within the company as well with other utilities and vendors.
Construction Standards - Research, develop, review, approve, and assist with production and implementation of Construction Standards used by Seattle City Light and other qualified personnel. Construction Standards, for example, identify the parts, pieces, and dimensions required to frame a pole. Apply Design Standards to ensure all Construction Standards are compliant with national, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations. Perform limited, informal field audits to promote and verify standards compliance.
Material & Equipment Standards - Provide subject matter expertise to Asset Management personnel regarding the initial cost, maintenance cost and requirements, and failure history. Provide subject matter expertise regarding identification and stocking levels of emergency replacement material and equipment. Research, develop, review, approve, and assist with production and implementation of Material Standards (including approved supplier lists); update the Stock Catalog and interact with Passport. Participate in commodity bid review and award process as necessary. Stay abreast of industry standards and quality assurance issues and philosophies. Participate in industry standards committees. Keep Seattle City Light engineers informed of industry developments and trends. Develop inspection plans for certain commodities, evaluate non-conforming material prior to receipt and make recommendations regarding fitness for use. Investigate non-performing or failed products and make recommendation regarding fitness for use. Identify causes and take action to preclude repeat of problem. Assist Material Control with identifying and eliminating obsolete material from inventory. Maintain peer contacts within the company as well with other utilities and vendors.
Depending on experience, aptitude, desire for professional growth, and the needs of the organization, responsibilities may shift over time from one primary area to another at the discretion of the Supervisor.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) and six years of professional electrical power engineering experience or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional electrical engineering work on major electrical power systems. Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of Washington.
Desired qualifications include six years working in an electrical utility environment. One year standards engineering work: design, construction and/or material & equipment. One year design engineering work: overhead, underground, distribution, network, transmission and/or stations. Be an excellent writer, an effective speaker, detail oriented, with strong logic, organizational and problem solving skills. Be a self starter with the ability to simultaneously manage multiple, complex projects with minimal direction.
