Director, Federal Relations
Directs advocacy programs and activities before Congress and federal agencies to achieve public policy objectives and identify threats and opportunities relating to business line interests. Analyzes legislation and regulatory measures within the framework of association policies and priorities. Represents AAA before federal entities, on coalitions, and other external groups. Relationship of Job to Management This position reports to the Managing Director, Government Relations. Supervisory Responsibilities This position has functional responsibilities and two (2) direct reports. Duties and Responsibilities
Lobbies Congress and federal agencies on AAA policies and priorities. (25%)
Analyzes legislation, drafts committee and/or regulatory testimony position statements to Congress and federal agencies. (20%)
Facilitates club/National Office dialog to seek consensus on developing official association positions on controversial federal issues. (15%)
Serves as AAA representative at high-level Congressional, federal, and trade association meetings. (10%)
Provides insight, assessment and guidance on the political implications and ramifications as association policies and positions are developed and advocated. (10%)
Directs AAA club "grassroots" actions in support of federal initiatives. (5%)
Presents AAA federal policy positions and advocacy opportunities before the Public Affairs Committee. (5%)
Directs development of briefing materials for officer, CEO and Board discussion and action. (5%)
Prepares and monitors budget expenditures for Federal Relations. (3%)
Serves as liaison to AAA Publishing Alliance on selected public affairs initiatives. (2%)
Requirements
Master’s degree and four (4) to six (6) years experience on Capitol Hill or in Federal Regulatory Agency
Or Bachelor’s degree and eight (8) to ten (10) years experience on Capitol Hill or in Federal Regulatory Agency
Strong written and oral communication skills
Basic PC skills in standard applications
High level of experience in the public policy arena as well as the ability to reach out to many external contacts to achieve association objectives
Excellent diplomatic skills
Excellent leadership and management skillsPolished presenter with outstanding speaking skills
