The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for an Accelerator Utilities Cooling Loop Systems Engineer. With the world’s highest flux reactor-based neutron source (the High Flux Isotope Reactor) and the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source (the Spallation Neutron Source), ORNL has become the world's foremost center for neutron science. Research at these facilities will encompass the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences and will provide opportunities for up to 2000 researchers each year from industry, research facilities, and universities all over the world. The Neutron Facilities Development Division of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is seeking an experienced technical staff member to provide the systems engineering design authority and technical leadership direction in support of the operations and maintenance of and improvements to the assigned SNS accelerator technical component cooling systems. Manages and oversees engineering design and fabrication for upgrades to the existing SNS accelerator technical component cooling systems and new systems that may be required. Provides technical support during installation and commissioning of modifications to existing and new systems. Assists the PNFD Utilities Team Leader in developing technical and administrative goals for the team. Participates in future Accelerator Improvement Projects and R&D activities.
• Interfaces with responsible personnel in Research Accelerator Division to establish design criteria and performance requirements reflected in design requirements documents for assigned technical component cooling systems. Reviews and assists line management in the production of design requirement documents.
• Interfaces with responsible personnel in Research Accelerator Division to support the development of operating procedures for assigned technical component cooling systems
• Supports installation, testing, commissioning, operations, troubleshooting and maintenance of assigned systems.
• Approves actions within the work control process to correct system or equipment problems.
• Interfaces with responsible personnel in Research Accelerator Division to support the tracking of operating process variables for assigned technical component cooling systems to establish and evaluate trends.
• Demonstrates cognizance of the operability and reliability of assigned systems to RAD.
• Oversees and manages design support for the troubleshooting and evaluation of system hydraulics and the preparation of drawings (as built and new) of the SNS Accelerator technical component cooling systems.
• Develops a full set of documentation and as built drawings for assigned systems and ensures they are maintained in accordance with NFDD engineering guidelines and procedures.
• Proactively identifies and ensures timely resolution of critical issues.
• Accurately and reliably communicates technical status and performance to Engineering management.
• Participates in R&D and prototyping of cooling loop components/equipment.
• Supports preparation of presentations for, and responses to recommendations from, technical design reviews and advisory committees.
• Supports preparation of readiness review material for accelerator mechanical systems, and demonstrates in such reviews the readiness of these systems to perform to specifications in a reliable, safe manner.
• Assists in identifying required resources.
• Accountable for compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements including ISMS.
• Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics.
Qualifications Required:
An advanced degree in mechanical engineering and a minimum of 10 years experience
in mechanical and process engineering design, building and testing of complex
engineering systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must
have a sound understanding of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluids, heat transfer,
materials and system controls and have the ability to quickly grasp complex technical
problems. Must be able to technically analyze engineering problems to validate
operating performance using both traditional and specialized methods. Prior experience
working in a particle accelerator or nuclear field preferred. Excellent communication
skills, ability to work individually or as part of a team and lead from knowledge and
experience are essential.
