Position Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and visionary financial systems expert to lead us in a multi-year systems enhancement effort.
Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Treasurer, the Director of Financial Systems Planning and Management is responsible for developing the road-map that will lead us through a series of complex changes to our financial systems, including the redesign of our chart of accounts, an upgrade of our ERP system (PeopleSoft), the reengineering of core financial applications, and the delivery of enhanced technology tools to our campus constituents.
As the university has become more reliant on technology and seeks to gain efficiencies through the elimination of paper-based processes, the Office of Finance and Treasury is embarking on an effort to modernize its financial systems infrastructure. We are looking for a strong leader who has not only the technical knowledge and skills to help craft the plan, but who has the interpersonal skills and change-friendly approach needed to execute the plan.
The Office of Finance and Treasury provides core accounting, payroll, purchasing, and financial reporting needs that support the University's $1.4 billion operating budget and $2.7 billion capital plan. Additionally, we provide risk management, insurance, workers compensation management, student and other loan services, and a variety of other financial services that support the University's core mission of teaching and research.
Position Summary
- Directs the planning, strategy, and governance process for all finance-related systems and technology solutions which support university-wide stakeholders
- Manages the work of the internal staff and external technical consultants to ensure successful implementation and integration of major financial systems
- Develops and oversees a five-year financial systems plan that incorporates a migration to a new accounting structure (chart of accounts) and an upgrade to our core financial system (PeopleSoft) that requires a deep technical knowledge of financials systems and technology based solutions
- Accesses, recommends and implements technology solutions that are modern, compliant, secure, and well architected; understands the diverse needs of the University community and delivers systems and tools that provide value
- Develops and recommends programs and policies to address information security and privacy issues.
- Partners with campus leaders and stakeholders in financial systems planning and prioritization; establishes, enhances, and maintains effective relationships with all University constituents.
- Ensures that financial systems projects are delivered on time, within budget, and with expected results.
- Leads a structured and coordinated technology governance process within the Office of Finance and Treasury; ensures financial systems needs are effectively represented in the University's annual technology planning process.
- Serves as primary liaison to the Office of Information Technology to prioritize and coordinate financial systems projects.
- Oversees the hardware and software needs of approximately 140 staff in the Office of Finance and Treasury.
- Represents the Office of Finance and Treasury on a variety of University committees (e.g. Enterprise Systems Planning Group), requiring a in depth knowledge of systems architecture and technology
- Oversees the University Financial Systems and Support department and budget; establishes departmental and individual team members' goals and performance expectations and monitors the attainment of those goals/expectations.
- Collaborates with Finance and Treasury colleagues on strategic initiatives and other projects to identify and support appropriate technology solutions based on a detailed understanding of technology alternatives and business requirements.
Essential Qualifications
Position Requires:
- Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in technology systems planning and implementation.
- Deep understanding of financial systems and their relationship to financial reporting and other core financial processes.
- Detailed technical knowledge of ERP systems (PeopleSoft a plus) and the integration of other vended or custom applications.
- Strong understanding of data and systems architecture; demonstrated experience in architecting data and systems in a way that is efficient, scalable, maintainable, and that delivers value through the collection and analysis of data from a variety of sources.
- Dynamic leadership, communication (written and oral), and interpersonal skills; excels at collaboration, consensus building, and customer service.
- Demonstrated ability to manage large complex, multi-year projects, delivering technical solutions in support of financial operations; demonstrated knowledge and understanding of project management principles, methodologies, and best practices, especially within complex organizations and cultures.
- Ability to work effectively at all levels of the organization and to influence others to progress toward a common vision or goal.
- In-depth knowledge of technology solutions, products, and services.
- Demonstrated ability to deal with conflict and complex situations.
- Understands the impact of change and manages change effectively.
- Bachelor's degree in technology, finance, accounting, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred:
- Master's degree or higher in business administration, technology, finance, accounting, or related field; CPA a plus
- Experience implementing new financial accounting coding structure and/or new ERP systems a plus.
- Experience in higher education preferred.
