DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR

The Database Administrator position is a member of the Database Management Services team, within the Technology Services organization.  The Database Administrator is responsible for ensuring availability and operating efficiency of corporate data resources in support of business objectives. The Database Administrator provides centralized technical expertise, leadership, consulting, and technical support in the development and use of corporate data.  Duties include planning, designing, developing, maintaining, supporting, securing, monitoring, and tuning corporate databases.  The Database Administrator provides production support, shares 24/7 on-call rotations with other team members, and supports ongoing development projects and initiatives related to enterprise-wide data resources and database management systems. 

 

 

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Business Administration or related field.  Training in technical skills and management desired.  Experience beyond the minimum work experience requirement can be substituted for college hours on a year-for-year basis.

 

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

Three (3) years of experience in mainframe DB2 database administration in a medium to large-scale shop is required.  A minimum combination equivalent to five (5) years of database administration and mainframe programming experience in a DB2 environment may be considered in lieu of the required DB2 experience.  Recent experience with DB2 is preferred.Extensive technical skills and knowledge relating to the administration of DB2 for z/OS in both a production and a development setting, including: Logical and physical database designDatabase development Database administrationPerformance monitoring and tuningData backup and recoveryData security Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and conceptualization skills with attention to detail Thorough understanding of Relational Database modeling and design conceptsThorough working knowledge of SQL and query performance considerationsHands-on experience with database monitoring and administration tools and utilities (IBM, CDB, CA, BMC)Extensive knowledge of mainframe tools and utilities (i.e. JCL, TSO, ISPF, ENDEVOR, FILE-AID, Abend-AID, Strobe, Expediter)Extensive knowledge of IBM’s z/OS mainframe environment as it relates to the administration and performance of DB2 and related tools, utilities, and applicationsGeneral understanding of computing technologies and techniques such as distributed operating environments, networking, communication protocols (TCP/IP), and database connectivity (ODBC, DB2 Connect)Strong leadership and organizational skills necessary to manage or coordinate multiple technical development projectsExcellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with others within and across the organizationExcellent communication and training skills, both verbal and writtenStrong organizational and time-management skillsAbility to manage multiple concurrent tasks and conflicting prioritiesAbility to evaluate and recommend short and long-range solutionsEstablish and abide by policies, procedures and standardsStrong customer service skills

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Working knowledge of or exposure to IDMS or DB2 LUWExperience with at least one additional mainframe language (i.e. COBOL, REXX)Experience with Disaster Recovery/ Business Resumption planning, implementation, and testing Experience with on-call support of a 24-hour computer center operations in a medium to large organizationUnderstanding of resource and capacity planningUnderstanding of guarantee agency or financial services business operations
