Position Description:

Photo ArchivistPosition SummaryResponsible for physically conserving the studio's still photograph collection, based on an established plan. The archivist will eventually spearhead the conservation effort as he/she becomes acquainted with the material, and collection development in general. The position is also responsible for accessioning new items acquired by the Photo Archive. In addition, the archivist represents the dept. as the liaison between the Photo Archive and senior company management who are requesting photographs for their offices. The archivist may be called upon to perform job-related tasks, outside of his/her specific job description. The vast majority of the archivists time is focussed on photographic preservation.Primary Responsibilities 1. Responsible for maintaining a purposeful and thorough conservation effort, ensuring longevity for an historical asset. Maintains an inventory of archival supplies for the dept. Financially responsible to the Director for ordering goods and services against allotted budgets. Candidates must understand the archival process, with a solid understanding of both traditional printing, and digital imaging, as it relates to twentieth century photographic formats. Accurate record-keeping is vital, documented primarily in a Filemaker Pro-based inventory finding aid. (75%)2. Must provide knowledgeable collection access, for executives, based on his/her solid knowledge of cinema history and the art and science of photography. Must also possess a talent for working well with people. The service aspect of the job requires minimal accounting since requests are charged interdepartmentally. (10%)3. The archivist is in charge of accessioning collection acquisitions - an annual Publicity donation and possibly more. (10%)4. Additional responsibilities as assigned or requested. (5%)Job Requirements • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience. • 3 to 6 years progressively complex related experience• Proficiency in any of the following areas is a plus and the right combination is extremely beneficial: cinema history or any motion picture film studies, social anthropology or American popular culture, all aspects of photography including aesthetics, sciences, history - any experience making photographs or editing photographs.• Strong communication and organization skills.• The most important requirement: Integrity. Candidates must understand the importance and potential value in preserving a photographic collection, and therefore approach the challenge with the highest standards of workmanship, honesty and trust, and an innate desire to preserve the visual record.
