Qualifications:

POSITION SUMMARY: The Grains & Powders of the Ceramics & Plastics Division is actively seeking a Senior Research Engineer to support the engineering team in conducting hands-on laboratory experiments for key development programs in a team environment. Projects will focus on process, product and applications development activities on abrasives programs using alumina sol-gel processing technology, including synthesis of nano-sized ceramic particles, unique morphology micro-ceramic particles, and next-generation abrasive grains. Present data in oral and written reports. Survey relevant patent areas to identify and pursue proprietary opportunities. This process development programs will involve the use of ceramic powder (especially alumina) synthesis and processing knowledge for the processing of next generation abrasive materials. Phases of development include pilot, scale-up, and implementation of R&D processes into manufacturing. Product development projects will involve the custom formulation of abrasive materials and will require use of mixing, drying, crushing, sizing, and sintering of these materials. The candidate will also be required to conduct product testing including physical and mechanical property measurements as well as performance testing related to the application using a range of analytical and specialized test equipment.This position requires interaction with different groups in different sites. Up to 25% of total work time, travel is required.COMPETENCIES: Interested candidates should possess a PhD degree in Material Science, Ceramic Engineering, or a related field. 0-3 years of industry experience is required. The candidates should be creative and innovative with a problem-solving mentality. Good organization and hands-on skills are a requirement.
