The Bettis Laboratory has developed advanced Naval nuclear propulsion technology and provided technical support during the construction, operation, and maintenance of Naval nuclear propulsion plants for more than 50 years.  Bettis designed reactor plants for the first nuclear-powered submarines (USS NAUTILUS) and aircraft carrier (USS ENTERPRISE), all of the Nimitz class aircraft carriers, and the USS SEAWOLF.  A major initiative for the Laboratory is the design of nuclear-powered propulsion plants and electrical power systems for the next class of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.  The Laboratory’s main sites are located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Idaho Falls, Idaho.  Other locations where Bettis provides support include Charleston, South Carolina, and shipyards located in Groton, Connecticut and Newport News, Virginia.  The Bettis Laboratory is operated for the Department of Energy by Bechtel Bettis, Inc.

 

Bettis’ responsibilities for nuclear propulsion include research and development, design, testing, training, new construction and operational support, and the examination and  disposal of expended reactors.  This “cradle-to-graveâ€� responsibility provides the opportunity for diverse and challenging work assignments.

 

Location:  This position will be at the main site, located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Responsibilities:

Plant systems engineers at Bettis are responsible for developing the reactor plant designs for Navy Ships and for supporting operations and maintenance of nuclear-powered propulsion plants in the Navy fleet.  The work includes frequent use of complex computer model simulations, detailed interpretation and documentation of the results, and teaming with other engineering disciplines to develop and implement design and/or operating procedure changes as needed.  This responsibility also includes operational follow of fluid system and component performance, support during shipyard maintenance, development of procedures to improve operational flexibility, evaluation of cost-reduction initiatives, and assessment of reactor plant aging.  Bettis systems engineers develop knowledge of propulsion plant design features, equipment operation, mission characteristics, and operating and test procedures. 

 

Educational Requirements: Minimum:  BS degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering required, with thermal-hydraulic emphasis.Minimum:  3.2 cumulative GPA required; 3.5 or higher preferred.

 

Experience Requirements: Entry level and above.Power plant design or operations experience is a plus.
