Public Services Support Assistant

PUBLIC SERVICES SUPPORT ASSISTANT, The Libraries, to contribute to public services in the Barker Engineering or Science Library. Will be responsible for technical processing duties, e.g., journal check-in, claiming, binding, catalog maintenance, storage activities, and tasks related to daily processing workflows; participating in circulation activities, including policy interpretation and application, handling fines, and patron account maintenance; responding to inquiries; contributing to maintaining and developing training materials and documentation; maintaining statistics; participating in ESL and/or system-wide committees and projects; and assisting with other projects. May provide independent evening and/or weekend service desk support, assist with training or directing work of student assistants, help create or maintain web pages or contribute to maintaining and updating directional and informational signs, and assist at other library service points.

REQUIREMENTS: six months' direct/related experience that provides an understanding of library functions; excellent customer service skills and strong public service commitment; well-developed interpersonal and communication skills; strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills; and ability to work with minimal supervision, interpret and apply library policies to benefit users, and pursue results through appropriate channels. Experience in a Windows computing environment and with the Web required, as is working knowledge of basic software programs like Word and Excel. Must possess the physical stamina needed to shelve and shift books and other library material. One to two years of college highly desirable. Familiarity with academic libraries and MIT experience helpful. Knowledge of or willingness to learn automated library systems, including automated circulation systems desirable.
