Project Scientist / Textile Chemist

The Technology Solutions Group (TSG) of QinetiQ North America has an international reputation for developing and delivering innovative products and systems that perform under the most demanding conditions to government and private industry clients. Our TALON® robots are widely used in Iraq and Afghanistan to disable roadside bombs and our LAST® add-on Armor has been used to up-armor thousands of combat air and land vehicles since its debut in Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Our Precision Air Drop System (PADS?) has been used on more than 600 missions and has dropped more than 5 million pounds of cargo since its debut in August 2006.

QinetiQ is currently looking for a Project Scientist for Textile chemistry/Engineering POSITION SUMMARY The individual will be responsible for development and scale up of chemistries used in our reactive fabric products. These products include catalytic degradation and adsorption chemistry for remediation and decontamination/protection against toxic chemicals and biological agents.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The candidate will be an integral part of a team developing materials for personal and collective protection. The successful candidate will have a blend of both textile engineering and chemistry skills that will allow them to be able to take basic chemistries developed at FMI and incorporate them into textile materials. The candidate will use his/her skills to scale up these chemistries by optimizing their performance and working with vendors to manufacture textiles on a production scale. Experience with surface modification and functionalization of fabrics, fibers, and membranes as well as polymer chemistry is a plus. Experience in laminating different performance fabrics and membranes to create unique fabric performance structures, is also a plus. The candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining technical relationships with government agencies, academic research laboratories and industrial collaborators.

QUALIFICATIONS

 We seek a candidate with a college degree (BS, or MS) in Textile Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Engineering or relevant disciplines with experience in areas such as chemical synthesis, surface modification and functionalization. Product development experience in the textile area is desirable. The candidate should possess a blend of strong analytical, technical and leadership skills with demonstrated success applied materials research. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Must be able to work independently and as part of a diverse interdisciplinary team.
