Principal Software Engineer- Calabrio, Inc Mpls, MN

Position: Principal Software Engineer
I. Position Description
A Principal Software Engineer takes ownership of Calabrio packaged product software process and is given technical management responsibility of selected projects including tracking and reviewing work. This person is responsible for major portions of the functional specification and architecture of a product. A principal software engineer takes a “big picture” view of a software product, maintains a high degree of quality, and that all important aspects of product development are adequately addressed (i.e. makes sure nothing slips through the cracks). A Principal Software Engineer receives work direction directly from an engineering manager or team lead. However, a Principal software engineer will independently set some of their own work direction and report status to an engineering manager or team lead.
II. Position Expectations
· The technical responsibilities include a major role in the following areas:
o Functional specification
o Overall product architecture
o System design
· Mentoring other engineers in the department
· Being a team player that looks beyond their own work assignments who works to ensure the overall goals of the department and requirements of the software are being met
· Participates in cross team/cross department activities including product documentation reviews, product help system reviews, test plan reviews, sales support, trouble ticket resolution, training sessions, early field trail deployments, partner meetings, and customer meetings
· Proposes new product features as well as new product ideas
· Champions the investigation and introduction of new technologies
· Champions the investigation and introduction of department process improvements
· Is responsible for designing, coding, testing, documenting and supporting software components
III. Core Competencies
· Strong knowledge and experience in Web 2.0 application development (server side and client), Presentation Layer, API’s and frameworks such as AJAX, Flash, Flex, Java, HTML, etc.
· Experience in UI design and interaction requirements (look and feel, information architecture, wireframes, etc.).
· Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Excellent human relation skills.
· Experience in the following areas:
Inter-program communication techniques such as REST, SOAP, or RPC sockets.
Implementation of middle tier client/server solutions via Windows XP Services, Java applications or Java Servlets
Experience with Human Factors Engineering or Usability Testing
IV. Education/Experience
· B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent plus 10 or more years of experience with C++, Java or similar Object-Oriented language.
· 2 or more years of experience leading software development projects.
**Please note: Willing to relocate to Minnesota.
