Mechanical Design Engineer II

 

Summary:

Directs other Engineers, Designers and Drafters as required. Works with minimal supervision to initiate and implement design requirements of a new machine order including a new product or major redesign of an existing product. Follows the New Product Development Process (PDP) from a technical perspective, encompassing all aspects of design from concept through production startup.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: (Other duties may be assigned.)

 Accountable for leading/completing all technical requirements of assigned projects including new product design, product enhancements and cost reductions.Responsible for developing new products from concept, from an idea, or from a Marketing Specification, into a manufacturable product.Assure design intent/integrity is maintained.Prepare product performance specifications from customer or application requirements.Provide direction to subordinate engineers, designers, Offshore Engineering Group and other personnel to meet project goals.Provides project leadership for responsible program goals.Responsible for developing the product test standards and procedures for new products.Responsible for developing the Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)Analyze test data and prepare recommendations for approval.Evaluate competitor’s products as assigned and recommend improvement to products where applicable.Ensure products comply with Agency requirements.Prepare information for patent applications.Maintains working relationships with Suppliers, Vendors, Customers and all internal departments.Responsible for all design documentation including 3-D CAD design and 2-D layouts, product specifications, test specifications, DFMEA’s, BOM’s and additional as required.Responsible for all prototypes and prototype testing.Support Sales, Service, Manufacturing and other departments with technical information.Organize and maintain BOM and cost estimates for new products.Completes design related cost reductions and quality improvement ideas as assigned.Appraise current technology and apply it to products where possible to improve cost or performance.Assist in the training and provide guidance to new or less experienced engineers.Assist Manufacturing during production involving design changes or new product introductions or as required.Directly manage the activities of CO-OP students, Offshore Engineers, Designers or other Engineers as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) from four year college or university in Engineering, plus three plus years related experience and/or training

 

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have experience with Solid Modeling (Solid Works, Pro E, Etc.), Finite Element (FEA) design software and Microsoft Office word processing software.
