MUNITIONS RESPONSE SCIENTIST I/II Pittsburgh, PA Office Specialty/Discipline: Sciences Location: Tetra Tech NUS, Inc. – Pittsburgh, PA Job Level: Junior Employment Status: Full-Time (Regular), Exempt JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for supporting mid-level and senior staff in management and technical aspects of munitions response program (MRP) projects. Primary activities will be to provide support for CERCLA remedial process requirements as applied to munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) and munitions constituents (MC), operational range assessments, and RCRA permitting of open burning / open detonation (OB/OD) units for military munitions. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: These duties and responsibilities include the following: · Assist mid-level and senior personnel in the planning, development, and implementation of Work Plans for MRP CERCLA projects integrating CERCLA requirements, MEC investigation and safety requirements, UFP-QAPP, and MC requirements as well as state-specific requirements. · With direction from mid-level and senior personnel serve as author of sections of work plans, reports and proposals. · Assist mid-level and senior personnel in the preparation of reports of investigations, human health risk assessments, ecological risk assessments and environmental conceptual site models. · Participate in project meetings with clients and regulators. Some overnight travel may be required. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: BS or advanced degree in natural sciences or engineering. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Munitions Response Scientist I: No experience required Munitions Response Scientist II: 2 to 5 years experience Relevant experience includes work with CERCLA / RCRA projects. In particular projects involving the preliminary assessments, site inspections, remedial investigations, and feasibility studies for ordnance items and chemical constituents of ordnance items, projects involving the development of RCRA S-X Permit Applications and closure plans for OB/OD units and/or project involving environmental assessments of operational DoD ranges. Experience can include laboratory work and environmental fieldwork. SKILL REQUIREMENTS: Skills requirements include the following: · Good technical, writing, and verbal communication skills required. · Knowledge of IBM-compatible computers and Microsoft Windows Office software applications required. · Ability to assist mid-level and senior staff in planning sessions, negotiations with regulatory agencies, development of planning documents, and oversight of field investigations. · Ability to assist mid-level and senior staff to reduce, evaluate, interpret, MEC and MC data to draw appropriate conclusions and recommendations. · Language Skills: o Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, databases, field notes, reports. o Ability to write clear and concise sections of advanced-level technical reports and correspondence. o Ability to communicate verbally in an effective manner. · Mathematical Skills: o Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals o Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. o Ability to calculate values and amounts such as discounts, interest and commissions, · Reasoning Ability: o Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. o Ability to deal with complex problems involving several concrete variables in unstructured situations.
