Job Summary
UL University (ULU), a division of Underwriters Laboratories, seeks an experienced professional to join its management team as an independent contractor - Grant Writer. The individual selected will research, identify, develop and respond to federal, state and private grant opportunities in the areas of technical education, conformity assessment, global market access, workforce training, and professional development. The position is also responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on the performance of program activities that are funded by third-party public and private sources. Position reports to the Chief Learning Officer. Work location not critical but prefer Washington DC, Raleigh, NC or Chicago area.
Job ResponsibilitiesPerform prospect research on available federal, state, and private grants Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required by funding organization to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals Maintain current records in database and in paper files, including grant tracking and reporting Generates proposals and supporting documents in response to grant solicitations Serves as a liaison to all funding agencies or organizations Confers with Underwriters Laboratories personnel affected by proposed program to develop program goals and objectives, outline how funds are to be used, and explain procedures necessary to obtain funding Develops estimates of cost, time, and resource needs Meets with representatives of funding sources to work out final details of proposal Directs and coordinates evaluation and monitoring of grant-funded programs Assists department personnel in writing periodic reports to comply with grant requirements Maintains master files on grants Monitors paperwork connected with grant-funded programs
Required Knowledge and SkillsStrong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals Strong editing skills Attention to detail Knowledge of federal and state grant information sources Experience with proposal writing and institutional donors Possess excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Word, Access, Powerpoint and Excel), and database management skills Working knowledge of training, accreditation processes, organizational development and e-learning practices, including current trends
QualificationsUniversity degree or equivalent work experience (Equivalent to U.S. Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field) Minimum of two years experience with grant writing Demonstrated ability to independently identify needs for projects or programs, formulate objectives, plan and execute projects and/or programs, and manage programs Proven track record in grant writing and program development Proficient in research, interpreting, and analyzing grant and program requirements Produce a quality work product within tight time constraints
