GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH SCIENTIST

Applied Research Associates (ARA), Inc., is a recognized leader in the development of cutting-edge research, engineering, and software solutions that are critical to national defense problems. Our New England Division is focused on developing sensors, robotics and control systems that provide critical technology to our soldiers in the field. We are seeking a motivated geophysical engineer/scientist to provide technical leadership and expertise in sensor modeling and development to support target recognition and data/sensor fusion algorithm development.    As the successful candidate for this position, you will participate in the identification, testing, evaluation, development, and application of new sensor-related technology for remote characterization of environmental, military, and civil infrastructure applications. You will have the opportunity to market new R&D business opportunities to support geophysical sensing technologies and the ability to collaborate with Government laboratories and sponsoring agencies on military sensing applications for DoD and DoE missions.   Benefits   ·  Work Environment – Although ARA is committed to providing superior service to our customers, we also like to have fun. With our focus on cutting-edge research, we have adopted an academic atmosphere with casual dress, lunch time learning seminars, and a weekly social hour. We believe that a relaxed atmosphere facilitates innovation. ·  Compensation – In addition to a competitive base salary and the option to participate in medical/dental/vision insurance, ARA employees also receive annual bonuses and performance-based raises. The company also contributes up to 15% of your annual salary to 401(k) and ESOP retirement accounts. ·  Continued Education – In addition to our internal lunch-time learning seminars, ARA encourages and supports continuing education. We pay for continuing education courses and one professional journal subscription or conference attendance each year. ·  Opportunities – We encourage new ideas and support independent marketing to new customers. Internal research and development is an important part of our business model and we see growth into new business areas as a fundamental requirement for growth as a company.   Required Qualifications   M.S. or Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Geophysics, Acoustics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics or a closely related discipline. 5+ years experience in sensor modeling/development, particularly seismic/acoustic sensors. Excellent oral and written communication skills. U.S. citizenship (applicants selected may be subject to a security investigation). Desired Qualifications   5-10 years experience in computational methods that include data processing, visualization, modeling of acoustic, seismic, and/or electromagnetic signals in the ocean, earth or atmosphere as well as statistical signal processing, data fusion and numerical simulation for landmine and unexploded ordnance detection, contaminated site characterization, non-destructive evaluation and assessment of hard and deeply buried or inaccessible sites. Demonstrated creative problem-solving skills.
