Fire Protection Engineer IV/V
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking highly-qualified candidates with expertise in nuclear plant fire protection, including experience and sufficient knowledge base to review the broad-scope issues embedded in the nuclear industry’s transition to (implementation of) NFPA 805. Duties may include development or review of fire protection programs or elements thereof, performance or review of design documents and calculations, development or review of methods for performing fire modeling and risk analysis in the nuclear industry, providing support in conducting or reviewing probabilistic fire risk assessments, and development of fire protection regulatory requirements and guidance applicable to the commercial nuclear industry.
The successful candidate will have a broad range of skills and familiarity with associated state-of-the-art tools and methodologies in several of the following areas:
1) Compliance with NRC fire protection rules and regulations, 10CFR50.48, 10CFR50 Appendix R
2) Post-fire safe shutdown analysis for nuclear power plants, including knowledge of nuclear power plant systems, operations and transient analysis
3) Fire science and modeling, including principles of fire behavior, ability to use fire modeling tools and appropriately interpret their results
4) Risk informed/performance based decision processes 10CFR50.48(c) and NFPA 805
5) Fire induced vulnerability evaluations or fire probabilistic risk assessments; including familiarity with the methods and software(s) typically utilized in nuclear power plants
6) Development of technical standards or model codes.
This position will support the PNNL Program Manager for Nuclear Regulatory Commission Safety & Environmental Reviews for New Reactor Licensing. The candidate will be required to prepare technical evaluation reports and presentations for the NRC. The successful candidate will contribute to writing proposals for developing business and managing projects and tasks. The successful candidate will be a mentor to other staff, providing guidance, direction, and insights to help them further develop their careers. Publication of research and participation in professional activities is encouraged.
Minimum Requirements
Engineer IV
Bachelors Degree in engineering or related field with 10+ years of directly related experience. Advanced Degree or Professional Engineering license in fire protection engineering, is desirable but not required, may account for 3 yrs of experience. Enhances technical/professional skills of junior staff through active mentoring and training. Integrates intellectual and technical capabilities of work teams. Skilled professional. Applies, on a broad basis, existing theories, principles, and concepts to a specialty field. Fully competent in all conventional applications of knowledge common in the specific discipline and function of work assigned. Principle Investigator (PI) or Co-PI on projects or tasks. Contributes to the completion of specific programs and projects. Key programmatic objectives are dependent upon decisions or recommendations.
Engineer V
Bachelors Degree engineering or related field with 17+ years of directly related experience. Advanced Degree or Professional Engineering license in fire protection engineering, is desirable but not required, may account for 3 yrs of experience. Manages moderate to large, complex and/or higher risk projects. Provides effective technical leadership to teams on multiple or significant projects and tasks.
Leads technical decision-making and direction at major project level. Sets or approves technical approach for solving problems and meeting client needs. Enhances technical/professional skills of junior staff through active mentoring and training. Technical expert. Selects and widely applies principles, theories and concepts in major field of specialization. Fully competent scientist/engineer contributing to science and technology solutions in the conventional aspects of discipline specialty. PI or Co-PI on multiple or significant projects or tasks. Guides the successful completion of major programs. Organizational objectives are dependent upon decisions or recommendations.
Qualifications
Position Requires a DOE Security Clearance (L or Q): Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B. All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.
