Fire Medic
Must have a high school degree or equivalent. Must be at least 18 years old on first day of employment. Must have a valid state driver's license. This position will be exposed to products of fire to include heat, smoke, toxic fumes, gasses. Exposure will also include extreme environmental elements such as heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and sun etc. At times, work will be done in an office environment. Basic physical requirements include walking, bending, stooping, stretching, climbing, running, crawling, dragging, carrying, and lifting up to 100 pounds. Must be able to perform their job tasks at any place on the Aerial Ladder from minimal extension to full extension. Must be able to wear and perform assigned duties while wearing a self-contained-breathing-apparatus, (SCBA), with minimal loss of effectiveness and efficiency. Must be able to navigate tight turns, stairs, and enclosed spaces while wearing fire fighting personal protective equipment to include, (SCBA). Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a security clearance.Must meet the requirements of the State of Virginia and/or National Fire Protection Association Standards (NFPA) to include: (All standards/regulations referenced are utilizing the most current edition possible, unless other wise stated herein.)* Current certification of Fire Fighter II (NFPA 1001).*Current Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) completion of certification at the level of at least 2 (3 preferred). Equivalent course completion and certification may be considered if it meets the requirements of Virginia Department of Fire programs requirements for EVOC. * Current Hazardous Materials Operations Level Certification (NFPA 472).* Must possess and maintain a current status State of Virginia/Maryland: E.M.T. * Physical Requirements of NFPA Standards 1582 and 1583, current edition, which includes passing a medical examination prior to assignment of duty and every year there after. Job Description : 1. Responds to all emergency medical service and fire calls as directed.2. Responsible for all phases of patient transportation.3. Renders BLS/ALS emergency medical stabilization as trained and qualified.4. Provides hazardous operational standby support.5. Guidance and direction, when appropriate, to EMS functions may be given to the Firefighter/EMT and/or Firefighter personnel.6. Provides assistance to the medical facility staff when required.7. Assesses extent of medical emergency at scene and establishes priority for emergency medical care via radio communications with appropriate physicians or under Protocol of Standing Orders.8. Complies with department policies, rules and regulations.9.Reports vehicle/equipment discrepancies immediately.10. Assures vehicle and equipment is clean and decontaminated.11. Assures that all appropriate vehicles, radios and equipment are inventoried and remain in a readied operational status on a daily basis.12. Will participate in medi-vac requirements as needed.13. Prepares all records and reports pertaining to the EMS function.14. Provides standby support for aircraft landing/take offs and related activities as required.15.Performs rescue of incapacitated personnel as required.16. Performs related work as required or directed.17. Participates as a member of the emergency response unit in providing fire suppression and prevention services, medical services, hazardous spill response and specialized rescue operations such as high angle technical rescues, confined space rescues, and water rescue in accordance with NFPA, Federal, State and local standards.18.Conducts regular inspection of buildings, storage areas, and equipment including fire extinguisher and fire systems, (sprinklers, fire hydrants, water control systems). 19. Participates in compiling and verifying and correlating data related to emergency response issues. 20. Assist with testing and servicing emergency rescue equipment.21.Assists in evaluating and issuing hot work permits as required. 22. Operates and maintains emergency response vehicles, (i.e. Fire Engines, ARFF vehicles, Ladder Trucks, Ambulances, and other related support vehicles). Receive all alarms calls; determine the level of emergency involved and which equipment should be dispatched (Fire vs. Ambulance vs. Hazmat Team, etc.).23. Document all alarm calls received, action taken, equipment dispatched, etc. for every incident.24. Receive, document, and dispatch appropriate personnel to all trouble alarms to determine the source. Maintain log of all trouble calls received, action taken etc.25.Accept and document all trouble calls and security alarms, dispatch to appropriate personnel to be investigated.26. Refer maintenance problems to maintenance personnel when necessary.27. Must be able to remain calm during emergency situations. Must be able to communicate with persons reporting emergency incidents, give instructions in life saving skills: CPR, First-Aid, etc. using established guidelines and materials.28. Must be able to use communication equipment and properly communicate with all agencies during emergency and non-emergency incidents, (i.e. Base Fire Personnel/Vehicles, Security, CUBE Maintenance, Aircraft Control Tower, UNICOM, Accomack County E-911, Chincoteague E-911, Accomack Sheriff, etc.) : :
