The Bettis Laboratory has developed advanced Naval nuclear propulsion technology and provided technical support during the construction, operation, and maintenance of Naval nuclear propulsion plants for more than 50 years.  Bettis designed reactor plants for the first nuclear-powered submarines (USS NAUTILUS) and aircraft carrier (USS ENTERPRISE), all of the Nimitz class aircraft carriers, and the USS SEAWOLF.  A major initiative for the Laboratory is the design of nuclear-powered propulsion plants and electrical power systems for the next class of U.S. Navy aircraft carriers.  The Laboratory’s main sites are located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Idaho Falls, Idaho.  Other locations where Bettis provides support include Charleston, South Carolina, and shipyards located in Groton, Connecticut and Newport News, Virginia.  The Bettis Laboratory is operated for the Department of Energy by Bechtel Bettis, Inc.

 

Bettis’ responsibilities for nuclear propulsion include research and development, design, testing, training, new construction and operational support, and the examination and disposal of expended reactors.  This “cradle-to-grave� responsibility provides the opportunity for diverse and challenging work assignments.

 

Location:  This position will be at the main site, located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Responsibilities:  

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing oversight of site operations to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.  The candidate is expected to have a strong working knowledge of regulations in the areas of hazardous, mixed, residual, infectious and municipal waste management.  This knowledge must encompass waste management topics such as generation, characterization, storage, shipment, treatment, disposal and permitting.  General areas of responsibility will include:  (1) establishing waste management policies; (2) providing guidance to onsite personnel on waste management issues; and (3) providing training to site personnel on waste management regulations and expectations.  This candidate will also be involved with the preparation of environmental permits and regulatory reports for submittal to environmental agencies.  This position offers the opportunity for familiarization with a wide array of site operations.  The candidate must enjoy working in a compliance organization.  Good verbal and written communication skills are also essential, as the candidate will be interfacing with engineers, crafts personnel, facility managers and outside regulator agency personnel on a regular basis.

 

Educational Requirements:  

Minimum of a BS degree in engineering or science in an environmental related discipline.

 



Experience Requirements:  

Candidate must have work experience (minimum of 5 years) in the area of environmental compliance with an emphasis on waste management.  Candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Certification as an environmental professional and familiarity with computer programs used by regulatory agencies for permitting and reporting are desirable.
