Communications/Networking Engi Description:Assume a technical position as a senior communications and networking engineer supporting various Government sponsors. Perform technical tasks as required to support the assessment and/or development and testing of terrestrial (wireless and fiber) and satellite communications systems and networks. Focus on innovative concepts and technologies. Involvement in working groups, IPTs, and Government teams for technical interaction and presentation of information will be necessary across all tasks. Typical tasks (with notional percentage of time) include: Communications Concept: develop novel and innovative concepts for new communications/networking technologies. Apply state-of-the-art techniques from the research literature to enable both evolution of systems and fundamentally new approaches. May involve work across a range of communications disciplines including modulation, error-control coding, synchronization, network switching/routing, traffic analysis, RF/optical engineering, transport protocols and others. Communications System Analysis: Perform objective analysis of communications technologies in the communications disciplines described above. These will also include knowledge and application of environmental propagation effects and stressed military environments such as jamming. Modeling and Simulation: Perform modeling and simulation of proposed system concepts and technologies including determination of system metrics of interest, verification/validation of simulation tools, analysis of simulation complexity and performance. Work expected in both physical/data-link layers and network/transport layers. Prototype Development: Develop hardware and hardware/software prototypes of specific communications technologies, both in-house and from other organizations. Determine methods to generate prototypes using component and system-level designs, integrate techniques and establish testbeds for exercising prototypes. Testing: Perform in-house and field testing of prototype and operational systems including test concept/definition, test planning, use of laboratory test equipment, analysis and reporting of results. Business Development: Assist in APL business development for communication systems programs on an as-needed basis.Qualifications:Required: MS or equivalent in electrical engineering, computer science or a related technical discipline. Strong knowledge of communications and networking technology. Strong oral and written communications and organizational skills. Desired: Educational and work experience in communication and network system analysis, modeling/simulation and test. Specific experience with DoD or other Government communication systems. Proven track record of innovative ideas and concepts in communications and networking. Experience working with R&D organizations such as DARPA and ONR.
