Beamlines Project Manager

Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, New York, seeks a Beamlines Project Manager.  Salary Commensurate with experience.  Description:  The Beamlines Project Manager is jointly responsible for the design, specification, procurement, and construction of the suite of six insertion device project beamlines at NSLS-II, a new $900M Synchrotron to be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory.  The Beamlines Project Manager will be expected to assist User consortia, and the facility, in the initiation and development of these other beamlines.
The Beamlines Project Manager will work under the supervision of the Experimental Facilities Division Director, and closely with other staff, especially the beamline scientists, as well as project stakeholders and Users. Jointly responsible for ensuring that the beamlines meet their scientific objectives on time and on budget.  Good communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills are essential. Successful candidate will need to liase with accelerator physicists, conventional facilities, and users. Must have demonstrated track record with each of these communities.
The role is highly specialized, requiring specific technical expertise and leadership capabilities.  Qualified candidates should have at least three years of prior beamline managerial experience at an internationally renowned  third-generation (or more) synchrotron facility during its construction period.  Specific experience in the specification, and design, of x-ray beamline components, and complete beamlines, as well as the project management of large, high value projects, and commercial experience in the procurement of such custom equipment is required. Candidate must have a demonstrated ability to work in a pressured environment to bring in such projects on time and on budget. Experience overseeing procurement of high-value x-ray instrumentation is essential, as is prior experience of working directly with vendors in the field of synchrotron instrumentation. Candidates with experience working in the commercial engineering sector will be given preference, particularly in the field of synchrotron instrumentation.  In addition, candidates will be expected to have a good working knowledge, and experience of, insertion device x-ray sources (both permanent magnet and superconducting).  Candidates should have experience of managing small groups of scientific and/or engineering staff in a task-focused environment with a demonstrated successful outcome.  Direct line management experience and experience with scientific recruiting is also required. 
Candidates must have at least 10 years of experience with project management software and have good familiarity with standard large project management practices (for example EVMS).
Qualifications include a degree with professional Engineer status, in a relevant discipline  and at least 10 years experience in relevant fields.
