Transmission Planning Engineer

The United Illuminating Company, headquartered in New Haven, Connecticut is an investor-owned regional electric utility that provides service to more than 320,000 customers in the greater New Haven and Bridgeport area. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team in our New Haven headquarters.

This position conducts and/or evaluates transmission contingency analysis and power flow studies (i.e. - steady-state thermal and voltage, and stability studies), as necessary to plan for the orderly long range expansion of UI’s transmission system, and in support of the annual development of the 10 year transmission plan. Determines the transmission facility changes and additions required to meet UI, ISO-NE and NPCC planning criteria. Accurately identifies and recommends capital projects that are cost effective, consistent with regional plans, reliability standards, planning criteria and system requirements. Perform up-to-date assessments of need and risk associated with a particular project as technical factors and costs change over time. Participate in NEPOOL and ISO-NE Working Groups and Task Forces, along with counterparts at other Connecticut and New England utilities to develop coordinated area wide solutions to interconnected system problems. Develop and maintain base case data and transmission system model for performing planning studies using necessary software tools (PSS/E). Conducts system impact studies (SIS) and present results to ISO-NE Working Groups and NEPOOL Task Forces for review and recommendation for approval and develop Project Plan Applications (PPA) and Transmission Cost Allocation (TCA) applications for submittal to the NEPOOL Reliability Committee for planned UI transmission projects. Active involvement with ISO-NE and NU in performing and/or reviewing system impact studies or facilities studies for new generation interconnection in Connecticut. Produce necessary submittals to ensure UI’s compliance with transmission filing requirements (e.g. – FERC form 715, NPCC library base case, ISO-NE PTF catalog updates, ISO-NE CELT and EIA-411 updates, CSC forecast and ISO-NE RSP updates). Member of the NEPOOL Voltage Task Force committee which develop methods, tools and standards for voltage/reactive analysis for both planning and operations purposes. Responsible for calculating and submitting to ISO-NE emergency ratings for UI tranmission and distribution substation power transformers and temperature based ratings on transmission lines.

This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited university in addition to 6-8 years experience performing engineering related duties.
