General Information
Reporting to the Director, Government Relations, East Coast, the position would be
TransCanada's government relations representative in north eastern US states and Washington, DC. This position would work closely and coordinate government relations activities with other US based TransCanada government relations staff. The actual office location for this position has yet to be finalized but will be within the New York area.
Responsibilities
- Develops and maintains influential relationships with elected and senior public servants, community leaders and industry and government associations in the assigned US region.
- Anticipates and responds to political and policy environments and issues which affect TransCanada's business interests
- Develops and implements government strategies and plans which support TransCanada's business objectives
- Provides advice and recommendations to senior leaders and business units on government relations, communications and community investment/relations issues
- Monitors trends, developments and initiatives in government policy and legislation which might impact TransCanada's business interests. Provides analysis and recommendations on how impacts may be mitigated
- Provides communications strategies and advice to address government related policy issues
- Prioritizes issues to be advocated/communicated with government and ensures TransCanada's positions are coordinated with affiliated entities
- Actively monitors broad political, government, and regulatory environments and provides advice and recommendations to address concerns with trends or issues which may impact TransCanada
- Actively participates in pertinent industry associations to advocate TransCanada's policy positions
Qualifications and Education
Competencies Required:
- A team player who is a good listener, encourages collaboration and who is proactive in achieving consensus in achieving objectives
- Good problem solving skills with an ability to bring divergent views together and achieve a win-win solution
- A strategic thinker with very effective decision making abilities; decision making skills based on a combination of experience, judgement and analysis
- Good business acumen # excellent knowledge and experience of policies, trends, practices and information as related to government relations
- A self starter with the ability to work with minimum supervision
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills
- Able to analyze complex political and policy issues and situations and provide strategic advice and direction
Education and Experience
- University degree in public relations, political science or related field
- 10 years of progressively related experience in public or government/public affairs experience
- Experience and relationships in the energy industry, including state and federal energy regulators and government, is preferred
- Extensive travel is required
