Distribution Management System Engineer

OCCUPATION: Electrical/Electronics Engineering Build your career here and experience the advantages that come with working at National Grid as a SCADA / Distribution Management System Engineer for the Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) located in Hicksville, New York.  The SCADA/DMS Engineer will act as a team member that provides the infrastructure, application and database support for a system that has been identified as a CNI system.  Support responsibilities will include hardware and software design for the mission critical Long Island Distribution Management System (DMS), which is used by Electric Service for distribution system monitoring and control of the Long Island Power Authority’s electric distribution system.   The position also involves the development, maintenance and troubleshooting of custom software solutions. Responsible for all aspects of new system/application implementation - requirements definition, process definition, design, testing, installation, support and ongoing maintenance. Provide all aspects of support for various systems/applications that the group is responsible for and acts in the capacity of Database Administrator for the section’s Real Time PI Historian and relational databases. The position also includes performing any necessary system administration, networking, preventive hardware maintenance and security management work to ensure the continuous and secure 24x7 operation of the systems. The position will require interaction with both internal organizations and external vendors to ensure timely and efficient delivery of service. Work activities Â· Provide all hardware, software and administration support for the Long Island DMS.· Provide all aspects of support for the Continuous Emissions Monitoring (CEM) Reporting System, EnternNet View, PI Real-time Historian and EMS Data Warehouse.· Develop custom software solutions as required. · Participate in the development, maintenance and operation of the IS infrastructure (hardware and software) associated with the CNI systems. Perform troubleshooting of both hardware and software problems as they occur.  As necessary, test and document all system changes in an off-line, development environment to ensure continuos operations of the production systems. Plan and execute system maintenance work in an on-line operating environment. Responsible for supporting all LI SCADA DMS platforms (i.e. Production, Development) Participate in 24x7 rotational, off-hours standby support coverage for the CNI systems. Responsible for responding to requests for support and ensuring that actions are properly logged. Notify users and other interested parties of progress and take corrective action as necessary to avoid or minimise delays or system downtime. Participate and coordinate in disaster recovery efforts to ensure adequate backups and their viability. Participate in the planning for future CNI application or infrastructure projects.  Participates in project teams as necessary to ensure compliance with CNI principles. Skills Experience & Qualifications Required: Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science. In depth knowledge of computer applications and strong working knowledge of computer software, hardware and networking is essential. Has working knowledge of computer security management. Proficient in programming languages such as Visual Basic, Cold Fusion, C/C++ and FORTRAN. Capacity to take complete responsibility for the development and maintenance of the programs used to run the SCADA system.  Troubleshooting skills to fix problems with any of these critical software components. Must be able to work independently and/or with a project team composed of engineers, consultants, contractors and technical specialists. Must be willing to participate in 24x7 rotational, off-hours standby support coverage for the CNI systems. Must be able to work effectively with vendors and research technical advances in engineering, computers, networking, and communications systems for potential use within CNI. Commitment to customer service excellence. Excellent verbal and written communication and listening skills. Self-learning and a very analytical background are essential pre-requisites. Innovation, adaptability, and the ability to demonstrate and promote teamwork.Preferred: A minimum of 3 to 5 years experience with real-time systems and an understanding of electric system operations.  Experience in SQL, UNIX (LINUX, AIX), and Oracle database programming (PL/SQL).
