Director of Accounting

Primary Role:

American Water is the largest water services provider in North America, serving more than 17 million customers, with activities in 32 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and Canada. We own and operate over 350 water and wastewater systems.

We are currently recruiting for a Director of Accounting for our Cherry Hill location.

The focus of this position is to maintain complete and accurate fixed asset records and reports in accordance with USGAAP, IAS, Regulatory, Tax and Company policies and procedures.

Responsible for the overall accountability for assigned companies' Financial Statements and responsibility for the timely and accurate delivery of the General Accounting Group's work.


Key Accountabilities:

Provides guidance on accounting activities that are highly complex and sensitive in nature.
Directs implementation on company policy and procedures necessitated by US GAPP, Regulatory or company mandate by partnering with appropriate business teams.
Identifies strategies to improve processes and control costs in coordination with other SSC Directors and other appropriate business teams.

Oversees the monthly and annual closing process to ensure accuracy.

Interfaces with Directors to ensure compliance with cross-team accountabilities, responsible for maintaining process standardization and delivering quality financial statements.

Interfaces and supports the subsidiaries' operational and functional teams as required.

Responsible for the completion of internal and external audit activities in coordination with SSC Directors and other business teams as required.

Strong leadership skills, including ability to work effectively with all levels throughout the organization and across functional lines and to lead cross functional teams.

Ability to handle confidential or sensitive information according to American Water's applicable policies.

Ability to: identify, quantify and communicate the effects of business issues; and develop, present and implement corrective or improvement solutions.

Ability to analyze customer needs through soliciting, evaluating and acting upon customer feedback.


Knowledge:

Recognized as an expert in their field; can lead a team of fellow professionals to meet the objectives of the company.

Comprehensive and advanced knowledge of US GAAP, accounting requirements and practices of regulatory agencies (SEC, state utility regulatory bodies, etc.), and highly technical expertise required in rates or accounting/finance.

Advanced knowledge of financial systems, frameworks and functionality.
Utility industry, shared services or multi-company corporation experience a plus.

MBA Required.

CPA, CMA or CFA required.
