Combustion Research Engineer
The Fuels, Engines, and Emissions Research Center (FEERC) in the Engineering Science and Technology Division (ESTD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking experienced combustion research engineers to participate in the development of analytical and experimental processes for characterizing and evaluating complex technical issues associated with internal combustion engine technologies used in transportation and stationary power research.
The selected candidates will conduct and report the results from a variety of research assignments related to advanced technologies for improved efficiency and emissions in internal combustion engines. Research assignments will be in the areas of combustion management, advanced combustion, and/or fuel spray processes.
The work will involve interaction not only with ORNL research staff, but also with collaborators from universities, other National Laboratories, and private industry.
Position requires a Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering or other relevant scientific discipline in addition to the background, education, and experience to contribute to research activities related to combustion management, advanced combustion, and/or fuel spray processes or an M.S. degree with experience equivalent to a Ph.D. with experience in the areas indicated above. The position also requires extensive experimental skill and experience as the successful candidates will be expected to design and set up experimental systems as well as analyze and report on experimental data. The position requires knowledge of advanced engine control hardware, fuel spray characterization, and/or experience with other laboratory systems such as those used for data acquisition and engine dynamometer control. The position also requires knowledge of laboratory R&D methods for engines and stationary power and associated instrumentation, such as exhaust gas analysis instrumentation and particulate matter measurement. He/she will also be responsible for developing proposals for existing and new sponsors as growth opportunities develop for transportation and stationary power programs. The candidates must possess excellent communication skills, written and oral, along with a strong commitment to scientific integrity in order to report on research results to industry and government sponsors and at technical conferences. The individual must be able to work well with individuals and in a team environment. The candidates must also be self-motivated and be able to perform duties in a time efficient manner. Additionally, experience with an engine manufacturer or the automotive industry is extremely desirable.
No Clearance is required for this position.
This position is located at the National Transportation Research Center (a joint facility of ORNL and the University of Tennessee) in Knoxville, Tennessee
