The Sensors & Wireless Lab is part of Honeywell's Automation & Control Solutions business and has a strong tradition of developing unique MEMS based sensors and Microsystems such as uncooled infrared sensors, micro-bridge mass air flow sensor, gas chromatographs on a chip, and handheld point-of-care medical diagnostic instruments.
In recent times the sensors lab has also done work in the area of functional nano-materials for chemical and biological sensing. In addition, the Lab is a world leader in developing robust wireless sensor networks and integration of wireless technology with sensors.
The Sensors and Wireless Lab needs a Senior Physicist in our Micro Devices group to engage in research, design, and development of next generation enabling sensing technologies and solutions. A qualified applicant for this position is responsible for identifying new sensor physics for Honeywell applications, and performing research, design, and development of key technologies to drive next generation of products in combustion, HVAC, environmental, health, safety, security, industrial, and transportation applications. The position entails working with a team of technicians, engineers, and other scientists to create and execute research and development programs deploying various solid state, plasma, electrochemical, electromagnetic, photonic, and micro-fluidic principles to create novel new enabling technologies and integrated sensing solutions.
Responsibilities will include idea generation, project conception, planning and leadership, customer and business segment interface, requirements development, and transition of technologies to the relevant business. This entails working closely with peers, business leaders, and internal and external collaborators to drive project success. Project leadership from initial concept, through development, test, prototype evaluation, and transfer to production phases will be required. Strong communication, teaming, project management and self starting skills are required.
Specific Duties:
• Research fundamental sensor technologies. Develop new sensors from concept to technology transfer.
• As a key member of a multi-disciplinary development team, design innovative commercially viable sensor products.
• Improve performance of existing sensors through application of new developments in materials, approach, or sensing technologies.
• Design and conduct experiments to verify conceptual designs using physical model prototypes, simulations or other methods when necessary. Design automated lab fixtures to verify performance to specifications.
• Characterize sensor performance with respect to operating environment and application. Validate sensor performance at customer sites to confirm successful application and results. Interact with government customers during the project execution phase leading to next phase funding or successful program close.
• Support application of sensors in field trials and at customer sites.
• Guide engineers and other scientists in development of sensor principles.
• Publish papers in premier conferences and journals.
• Participate in external standards and steering organizations to help drive the lab's long term commercialization objectives.
Education & Experience Requirements:
• PhD in Physics or Engineering Physics from a premier research university.
• Minimum 8 years experience in research and development of sensors and/or sensing systems.
• Demonstrated ability to conceive and demonstrate new sensing principles, leading to product introductions or creation of new programs.
• Due to government security clearance requirements, must be a US citizen to be eligible for hire.
Additional qualifications:
• Demonstrated ability to propose and win major government contracts with relevance to business objectives.
• Demonstrated competency in hands-on experimental techniques in semiconductor physics and electromagnetic and optical sensors, data acquisition and analysis, electronics and optical component development and evaluation. Mechanical design and modeling.
• Demonstrated experience in leading and managing complex sensor development programs.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Experience with MEMS design and fabrication, discrete or integrated electronics, micro-fluidics, photo-voltaics, or integration of sensing systems desired.
