Senior Manufacturing Engineer--NPI

Well established, publicly traded OEM in San Diego County seeks experienced Senior Manufacturing Engineer to join its growing team. This is a critical and high profile role focused on product launch of a critical next generation system that has been in development for the past 3 years.  High technology system encompassing over 40,000 different parts.  Ideal candidate will have experience transitioning new machine/system/capital equipment from initial design into prototype stage.  Experienced with lasers and/or optical systems highly desirable. SUMMARY:

The Sr. Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for preparing the factory to launch new products. This person will lead teams consisting of Design Engineers, Process Engineers, Scientists, and Manufacturing Management, which specify, characterize, and control product performance. Methodologies used include DOE, Six-Sigma, and Gage R&R, FMEA, DFM, Process Charts and other processes. This self-directed person relies on his/her extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.Apply knowledge of technical concepts and theories used by professionals in area managed. Provide direction to management on complex technical issues. Identify, budget, and purchase capital equipment needed to meet schedule requirements. Evaluate new product designs for manufacturability, quality, and reliability. Recommend design improvements. Create assembly and test processes and procedures. Create data collection plans. Evaluate this data and improve product performance. Recommend and develop improvements to business processes. Facilitate completion of prototype and pilot production units to meet schedule requirements, leveraging others where possible. Communicate concisely with peers and management (Status, issues, ideas for improvement). Evaluate and analyze data acquired during system and module test using programs such as MS Excel, MS Access, JMP, and Lab View. Make recommendations for process modifications based on analysis. Work on assignments that are generally not routine in nature where ability to recognize deviation from accepted practice is expected. Thrives in a self-directed, fast-paced environment, and adapts easily to change. Work in collaboration with Supplier Engineers to establish capabilities in the supply base to manufacture complex subsystems which deliver high integration yields Meets deadlines.

QUALIFICATIONS to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Solid understanding of a variety of manufacturing processes, Industrial Engineering concepts. Familiar with DOE (Design of Experiments) techniques. Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings per GD&T Y14.5. Ability to evaluate and analyze data using programs such as Microsoft Excel, MS Access, JMP, and Lab View. Strong communication skills at all levels of the company - Technicians to Management. Excellent teamwork skills. Able to work with personnel from various departments - Manufacturing, Engineering, Tech Development, Procurement, Human Resources and so forth. Ability to recommend (using data) and implement sound solutions and strategies in a fast paced environment where priorities change often. Ability to solve difficult problems and separate symptoms from root causes. Able to create project schedule plans with MS Project, and complete tasks on schedule. Able to create and analyze Bills-of-Materials. Able to learn and apply new information or skills.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCEBS degree in engineering or science is required (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering; Optical Science; Physics). 10+ years of experience within a capital equipment manufacturing organization is required. Very strong computer skills required, including expertise with MS Excel and MS Word. 6-Sigma experience preferred. Experience with opto-electrical-mechanical products is preferred. Experience within the Semiconductor marketplace or a similar field of technology is helpful. Understanding of laser and optical component design theory helpful. Extensive experience with a wide variety of data acquisition equipment and software is helpful. Understanding of vacuum systems and hands on familiarity with analytical methods used to monitor surface contaminations typically of concern in a vacuum environment, or optical alignment is a plus
