Director of Engineering

Inovar is a premier EMS (Electronic Manufacturing Services) company, in mid-volume THA (Through-Hole Assembly) and SMT (Surface Mount Technology) assembly, located in Logan, Utah. Inovar’s areas of value-added service include materials procurement, printed circuit assembly, test, and system build.  Inovar services customers from many industries including medical, computer, defense, industrial, data communication, and wireless.

Situation

Inovar has experienced tremendous customer, revenue and capacity growth over the past 3 years.  The engineering staff has increased from 11 to 27 employees over the same time period.  As the leading electronics manufacturing company in the Rocky Mountain Region, Inovar operates 4 high speed manufacturing lines and runs a four-shift operation.  Engineering serves numerous different roles including product line and process support, electronic test development, facilities maintenance. This position is available due to a recent promotion.


Position Summary

 

Inovar is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering who will manage the department, improve the processes, and operate as a senior leadership member of a team.

Candidate will be capable of effectively managing all engineering aspects of a manufacturing company.  Candidate will be responsible to interface with other departments and external customers effectively.  Candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing necessary processes. 

 

The position will be based in Logan, UT reporting to the Vice-President of Operations and having direct reports

including Product/Process engineers (10), Test engineers (4), Technicians (11) and Facilities (2).

 Leading and managing a large engineering staffManaging a $2-3M engineering budgetMotivating team to execute in a fast, dynamic business environmentWorking with manufacturing, quality and sales to ensure processes are capable of delivering outstanding product for Inovar’s customer baseAnalyzing current manufacturing line performance to develop process capabilities at a machine and line levelWorking with customers and internal staff to develop inexpensive, reliable test strategies for customer productsWorking with customers to solve DFM issues and address ECO’s in a cost effective manner

 


Ideal Profile


Proven engineering management experience.  Has experience successfully managing technical staff, ideally in an electronics manufacturing setting.  Comfortable setting directions and priorities and holding staff accountable for their attainment.  Has experience with managing both expense and capital budgets

 A background in electronics.  Has experience with printed circuit boards assemblies and electronics hardware in general

 Drive.  Has a good track record of taking initiative and intelligent risks.  Is a high-energy individual who can balance “pushing people” without burning them out.  Is willing to get hands dirty and make sure the job gets done.

 Analytical aptitude.  Familiar with determining process capabilities (CPk), machine tolerances, and control charting, Able to design experiments to establish relationships between input and output variables

 Vision and implementation.  Proven track record of identifying necessary changes and making those changes within a given area of responsibility.  Excited to put “his or her stamp” on the department and take ownership

 Team Player.  Able to work with other function heads and departments (e.g. Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain) to complete important cross-functional projects and reach goals to improve performance in the customers’ eyes.

 Leadership and Communication skills.  Very strong written and oral communication skills.  Has successfully managed a group of people and is able to inspire a department.  Able to interact at both the floor and executive level.

 Education.  Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
