Component Engineer

GPS Manufacturer/Distributor Assume Component Engineering responsibility for all component types assigned.  Take a pro-active role in ensuring that components used in Garmin products are high quality, reliable, and cost effective. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  Create specification control drawings for component parts used in state of the art electronics products Work closely with Engineering, Purchasing, Quality Assurance, and suppliers on all component issues Perform failure analysis on problem components Work with suppliers to resolve component problems to identify "root cause" and permanent solutions Perform component evaluations and qualifications Work with design teams to ensure the use of high quality, high reliability, cost effective components in new designs Provide component level expertise and consulting to Design Engineers Identify and promote the use of preferred components Qualify, approve, and audit component suppliers Work closely with suppliers to develop zero receiving inspection quality control plans that ensure quality at the source Work with production to solve component related production problems and develop standards and practices to avoid component problems Participate on the Material Review Board and resolve non-conforming material notices Participate on the Supplier Review Board  OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:  Perform other job-related duties as assigned  EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:  Associates Degree in Electronic Technology or above equivalent experience Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) 2+ years experience in electronics with experience in component level design and/or troubleshooting Working knowledge of all electronic component types Computer literate in IBM-PC systems and applications  DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET) from a four year college or university or higher education Working knowledge of all electronic component types AutoCAD or other Computer Aided Design (CAD) experience helpful Electronic component purchasing experience helpful Experience in statistical methods, Statistical Process Control (SPC), Design Of Experiments (DOE), International Standards Organization (ISO) 9000, quality standards and best practices Familiarity with Electronics Industrial Association (EIA), American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Military Standards (MIL-STD), and other industry standards Familiarity with electronic manufacturing processes, particularly Surface Mount Technology (SMT) Familiarity with various component manufacturing processes Good troubleshooting and "bench skills" General knowledge of physics and chemistry EEO/AA/M/F/D/V Company: Garmin Location: Olathe, KS 66062 Status: Full Time, Employee Job Category: Engineering Career Level: Experienced (Non-Manager)
