USC’s Keck School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, is seeking a Statistician II to join its team and perform statistical analyses for a multi-center longitudinal glaucoma clinical study (www.AIGStudy.net), other projects at the Center for Ophthalmic Optics and Lasers (www.COOLLab.net) and contribute to the development of novel diagnostic software.Job Accountabilities: Participates with Principal Investigators in the planning, design and development of research protocols and measurement instruments. Evaluates, recommends and implements procedures for data management and quality control. Develops input methodology and data file structure. Oversees data entry and maintenance of data files, including backups and hard copies. Supervises data entry and/or programming staff, as assigned. Assists in recruitment, screening, hiring, orientation and training of staff. Schedules, assigns and prioritizes workloads. Sets appropriate deadlines. Monitors employee performance on a day-to-day basis. Ensures timely completion of work. Evaluates and recommends statistical methods for data analysis. Reviews results for anomalies, investigates to determine cause and makes corrections if necessary. Interprets results and prepares tables or graphs for inclusion in reports and research papers. Prepares technical reports and papers on the research project's statistical methods and results. Assists Principal Investigators in writing scholarly empirical papers for publication and presentation. May participate in presentations. Evaluates the diagnostic accuracy and reproductability of glaucoma diagnostic technologies. Devises novel approaches to the diagnosis of glaucoma using expert system approaches. Devises novel approaches to the tracking of glaucoma disease progression. Contributes statistical analyses to scientific publications and presentations. Prepares manuscripts for scientific publications as a coauthor or first author. Communicates results and progress internally and externally through oral presentations. Contributes statistical analyses in to research proposals and grant progress reports. Acts as a subject matter expert and biostatistical resource for the research project and advising other team members in applying the correct statistical methodologies. Works with a database manager to perform checks on data consistency and completeness. Communicative, informal and confident. Enjoy working with other scientists in multiple disciplines. Inquisitive and willing to learn about the subject matter of research beyond statistics. Stay for a minimum of two (2) years in this job.Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.THIS IS A GRANT-FUNDED POSITION Minimum Qualifications: Master’s Degree with three (3) years experience.Biometry, Biostatistics or Statistics; mainframe and PC experience; experience with SAS, Epilog, BMDP, GLIM, or SPSS and programming languages such as FORTRAN, C++. Preferred Qualifications: Doctorate with five (5) years experience.Post-graduate degree (MS minimum, PhD desirable) is statistics is required.Experience with biomedical research projects is required.Experience in presenting scientific data (oral presentations, publications) is desirable.Experience with ophthalmic research desirable. Specifically, expertise in statistical methods that deal with the correlation between the two (2) eyes of each research subject is needed.Experience in expert systems (SVM, RVM) is desirable.Experience in statistical image mapping (SIM) is desirable.The University of Southern California values diversity and is committed to equal opportunity in employment.
