PURPOSE:

As a senior member of a team supporting mission critical administrative and academic servers in a dynamic 24/7 data center environment, provide Unix systems administration and technical guidance.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

· Administer performance, reliability and security for over 100 RedHat and AIX servers providing core University services.

· Install, configure and maintain operating systems, applications and tools including RedHat, AIX, Kickstart, NIM, Apache, Tomcat, JBoss, MySQL, PostgresSQL, Tivoli Storage Manager, Nagios, Tripwire and OpenLDAP.

· Deploy and maintain storage, including ISCSI and fibre SANs with EqualLogic, 3Par and Cisco hardware. Support the University’s enterprise backup infrastructure.

· Conduct complex technical projects and major system deployments.

· Take a leadership role in identifying and deploying software, hardware and processes that will improve delivery and support of critical applications.

· Partner with application owners in strategic planning for their applications.

· Responsibilities may include supervising other technical staff members.

· Work some off-shift hours with rotating on-call coverage.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Bachelor’s Degree and six years experience supporting production Unix systems and storage in a 24/7 environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Extensive experience with Unix operating systems, applications and tools.

· Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a complex and collaborative environment.

· Thorough knowledge of systems administration and security best practices and tools.

· Demonstrated proficiency in writing advanced scripts in Shell, Perl or other administrative scripting languages.

· Excellent communication and organizational skills.

· Preferred: Thorough knowledge of and extensive experience supporting production Linux and/or AIX environments; experience with technical project leadership and/or staff supervision; experience with automated installation, configuration management and monitoring such as Kickstart, Cfengine and Nagios; experience with server virtualization, load-balancing and clustering technologies; experience with SAN configuration and management; experience supporting servers running Oracle database applications.
