Payroll Manager & Analyst

ResponsibilitiesReporting to the director of financial systems and disbursements, the payroll manager and analyst manages payroll related systems, processes, and staff to ensure timely and accurate payment to approximately 1,800 employees. Assisted by the payroll specialist, s/he manages projects to improve existing or implement new payroll related systems and/or processes. The payroll manager and analyst reconciles compensation budgets, prepares or reviews compensation budget variance projections, and provides analytical and cost/financial modeling support for the development of the university’s benefits budget. S/he prepares or reviews fringe benefit rate calculations and ensures approved fringe benefits rates are used to full allocate benefits expenses. S/he is responsible for payroll interfaces to the general ledger, payroll related regulatory compliance and reporting, reconciliation of payroll related funds and accounts, and preparation of payroll related audit schedules. The payroll manager and analyst works with external auditors and continually assesses the adequacy of internal controls in payroll related areas.

QualificationsThe successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, information systems or related field and three years of progressively responsible experience with computerized payroll and accounting systems, payroll and benefit accounting, cost/financial modeling, budget preparation and analysis, work flow analysis, systems project management, and payroll and tax related regulations and research. Job-related education may substitute for up to two years of related experience. Requisite qualifications include excellent attention to detail, strong problem solving, customer service, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to ensure both the timeliness and accuracy of payroll and other job functions. The candidate must have a solid understanding of the principles of accounting applicable to payroll and benefits and superior skill with Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word. S/he will be an effective oral and written communicator and will have a strong service and teamwork orientation. Prior supervisory and SCT Banner HR and Finance software experience is highly desirable.
