EH&S Specialist I

The Laboratory & Chemical Safety division or the Biosafety/Industrial Hygiene division within UMMS is seeking a Environmental Health and Safety Specialist to help protect UMass Medical School employees, students, contractors, the general public, and the environment from potentially detrimental exposures to a broad range of biohazardous materials, and help to ensure that the Medical School maintains full compliance with both the letter and spirit of all applicable governmental and internal biosafety-related regulations, requirements, and guidelines.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Advises and trains personnel at main campus, University Hospital, and off-site facilities on safe work practices related to laboratory safety, hazardous waste safety, general safety, injury prevention, and hospital safety in accordance with internal, state, and federal safety related regulations and guideline. Assist with creating training curriculum on various aspects of health and safety. Conducts audits of hospital campus, research and clinical laboratories, construction sites, medical school support departments, and other areas throughout the Medical School and University Hospital where hazardous materials or biosafety materials are handled and stored. Interacts with Facilities and other departments to rectify identified discrepancies, or to institute corrective programs in response to new or modified internal or governmental requirements or regulations. Compiles and analyzes data and performs computations using spreadsheets and database software for chemical inventories and lab inspections. Interprets lab inspection data, forms conclusion about lab compliance, and decides on and plans next actions to be done. Conducts air, noise and other monitoring as needed. Conduct indoor air quality investigations. Maintains laboratory spill supplies and equipment. Assists with and oversees the collection of chemical wastes substances for proper disposal by Environmental Health & Safety Department. Participation in the Chemical Emergency Response Team, including on-call response, written evaluations of chemical spills, restocking of supplies used in spill clean up. Also responds to emergency calls for complaints of odors or leaks.

Requirements:

Minimum qualifications for EH & S Specialist II include A Bachelors Degree in the Biological Sciences or an equivalent discipline, and three years of relevant job experience managing, or assisting with the management of a biosafety program. Formal academic coursework and/or personal development short courses in biosafety-related topics. Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) credential is required. Proficient in Microsoft Office software and database applications. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills in order to interact with different staff levels. Understand and comply with regulations and agencies related to biosafety and select agents; i.e., NIH, CDC, APHIS, EPA, RCRA, Mass DPH, and Mass DEP. Respond to matters of urgency after normal working hours. Will participate in pager and/or on-call rotations as necessary. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and manage time effectively to complete assigned projects and tasks. Physical capability to wear personal protective equipment, including a full face respirator or comparable protection. Valid driver's license and dependable transportation. Normal visual and audio acuity. Physical condition must allow for considerable walking, crouching, bending and lifting.

Preferred qualifications include some supervisory experience and certification as a Biological Safety Professional (CBSP). Experience within an academic or clinical setting is also highly preferred. The Laboratory & Chemical Safety division or the Biosafety/Industrial Hygiene division along with the Occupational Safety & Environmental Health unit are also seeking candidates with less experience.

The EH & S I positions have a salary range of $33,009 - $45,385 and require a Bachelors degree in a related field and 2 years related experience.
