About the Position
Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed to improve access and retention of historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged students. EOP students have the potential and demonstrated motivation to perform satisfactorily in college, but they may not have been able to realize their potential because of their economic or educational background.

Reporting to Director of Academic Advising and Retention Services and working under limited supervision, the Director, Retention Programs for EOP and Special Populations guides the university's overall retention strategy for first generation, economically disadvantaged students, high risk and other vulnerable populations, such as Veterans and older-returning students. The Director will strategically create, coordinate, communicate, collaborate and implement a retention plan, within the university's priorities. The incumbent will coordinate with the Student Advising Center, First Year and Transfer, Enrollment & Academic Services and other units charged with admitting, transitioning and supporting the academic success of these special groups in order to strengthen and utilize this network of programs and services.

The incumbent will provide leadership in the planning, developing, organizing, administering, and evaluating programs and services for these populations. He/she will provide support and consultation to faculty and staff in offering strategies, data and expert guidance for supporting the success and retention of all special populations. The Director is responsible for implementing a retention campaign, improving retention and graduation rates of traditionally under-represented minorities, low-income and first generation students and, as necessary, represent the retention program to community organizations and the general public.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Supervises all employees in the unit, including student staff. Interviewing, hiring, evaluating, training, disciplining, and rewarding employees

- Provides leadership in the creation of a visible, accessible EOP program; is responsible for identifying best practices; ensuring a fully enrolled regular EOP and special admit program; developing and implementing Summer Transition Programs for First year and Transfer EOP students; targeting and reaching out to potential EOP admits; publicizing the value and success of the program; and coordinating with community partners to facilitate the enrollment and success of EOP students

- Manages the budget; develops, writes and disseminates reports in response to mandates and university requirements; and as a leader within the Division of Student Affairs, supports division priorities and collaborate with partners

- Develops, implements and assesses appropriate academic support programs to promote retention and graduation of high risk student populations, utilizing best practices. Collects and analyzes data to plan, write reports regarding deliverables and outcomes and implements improvements based on data and feedback

- Collaborates with constituents across campus and within the Division of Student Affairs and takes leadership in developing priorities, proposals and plans for the transition, retention and graduation of high-risk populations

Must have ability to work irregular schedules, including evenings and weekends.

Education and Experience
An earned masters degree, at least five years of progressively responsible professional experience working with student service functions, program development, academic advising, and/or supporting admission functions in a university environment and at least two years of management experience in the administration of academic support programs are required to perform the duties of the assigned position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Demonstrated management experience and skills in the development, implementation and evaluation of academic support programs
- Demonstrated experience and skills in working with students from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students, staff, faculty and other members of the community with excellent skills in written and oral communication
- Ability to quickly learn CSU academic policies and procedures as expressed in Title 5 and Chancellor's Office Executive Orders as well as those of SJSU and CSU, and ability to apply that knowledge to individual situations
- Must be solution-oriented. Ability to oversee projects and provide guidance and direction for the work of others
- Ability to work comfortably in a highly rules-regulated environment. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills
- Ability to write reports business correspondence, and procedure manuals
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, faculty, students and the general public
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and analyze data, and define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

Must have ability to work irregular schedules, including evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate would be a current incumbent in a management position in an advising or retention unit with a solid grounding in student development theory and practice in retention programming. The candidate would bring a proactive, innovative, team-oriented and solution-oriented style to program development as well as a thorough knowledge of issues surrounding academic support of disadvantaged and marginalized students. The ideal candidate will also understand the need to work collaboratively within and beyond the Division and the interests of the community in the work of the unit. Develop, implement and assess a comprehensive academic support program for EOP and other special population students. Experience training and supervising professional staff highly preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of using technology in various aspects affecting student learning, achievement and retention. Knowledge of various learning styles and cultural differences. Candidate will have skills in providing effective and resourceful problem-solving strategies
