Job Description

TIMSS (the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) and PIRLS (the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) are ongoing research projects providing international comparisons of student achievement. TIMSS is conducted on a regular four-year cycle, with TIMSS 2007 involving over 60 countries at grades 4 and 8, as well as a Benchmarking component for regional entities. An additional study of advanced math and science in the final year of schooling, TIMSS Advanced 2008, is currently underway. PIRLS is conducted on a regular five-year cycle, with PIRLS 2006 involving more than 40 countries at grade 4. A Data Graphics Specialist is responsible for meeting the Centers many graphic design print and Web needs related to the production of educational test instruments and questionnaires, reports, brochures, and other publications. The Data Graphics Specialist will join an internationally-acclaimed Center with a staff of 20-plus people conducting highly-visible international studies of mathematics and science (TIMSS) and reading literacy (PIRLS). Primary responsibilities of the position include working with a production team to ensure high-quality design and production of effective visual displays of large volumes of data in charts, diagrams, and tables; designing and laying out technical publications that are both graphic and text intensive; working with desktop publishing and graphics software in producing and revising educational test items and questionnaires; and assisting in the development and production of other graphic intensive materials such as informational and promotional brochures and attractive, professional Websites.

Requirements

A Bachelors degree in a related discipline or equivalent experience is required. Must have professional design and production experience, as well as excellent Internet and Web experience. Requires the ability to work effectively in groups and with several projects simultaneously. The ability to create and execute designs under the constraints of tight deadlines is also necessary. Experience in a multi-platform PC and Mac environment is required. Must have strong working knowledge of the following software: Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat, Photoshop) and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint). Experience with MS Equation Editor, Math Type or a similar equation builder is desired, and knowledge of Filemaker and Web development tools and languages (such as DreamWeaver, HTML and CSS) is preferred. This position is grant funded.
