CHEMICAL / HAZARDOUS WASTE SAFETY SPECIALIST

Purpose of position: Assist the Safety Coordinator with UT Arlington's Chemical Safety Program and ensure compliance as a Large Quantity Generator of hazardous waste with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.

 

Essential functions: Collect, transport, store, and dispose of hazardous waste. Maintain appropriate, accurate, and complete documentation and/or records to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies. Assist with all operations regarding the Material Accumulation Center. Perform inspections of laboratories and/or maintenance shops where hazardous waste or regulated recycled materials are generated. Report any infraction to the supervisor. Assist with the University's Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure program. Assist in the recycling program for mercury-containing fluorescent lamps, photographic fixer solution. Assist with the Hazardous Communication Program. Provide guidance to faculty, staff, and students regarding hazardous waste disposal requirements and chemical safety. Conduct or assist with hazardous waste disposal and/or chemical safety training. Communicate with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies concerning compliance and emerging standards. Assist in preparation and submission of applicable reports and documents (i.e., STEERS Report, Tier II Report, Waste Minimization Plan, etc.) Respond to campus emergencies including after hours, holidays, and weekends. Maintain 40-Hr HAZWOPER certification to include wearing a respirator. Manage clean-up procedures and disposal of material associated with hazardous material spills. Perform miscellaneous duties and assist other personnel in Environmental Health & Safety projects as assigned.

 

Marginal/Incidental functions: Use of University vehicle. Other functions as assigned.

 

Required qualifications:  Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, engineering, natural science, environmental science, or related field. No experience required with a BS degree. Valid Class "C" Operator's Driver's License (or other states' equivalent for driving a personal vehicle) or higher. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. Preferred qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. Experience in managing hazardous waste. Experience in safety or environmental related field. 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification. Excellent computer skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Required to wear and use a respirator. Occasionally required to travel to meetings, trainings, and/or conferences. Must have reliable transportation.
