Associate Director of Gift Planning

The Office of Gift Planning seeks an individual who has a solid foundation in planned giving vehicles and administration, excellent written and oral communication skills, a high customer-service orientation, and the ability to cultivate collegial and productive relationships to fill its available position of Associate Director of Gift Planning.

Gift Planning provides a way to help donors give to Tufts and reach their philanthropic goals through financial, legal, estate and tax planning. The Gift Planning Office works with donors and their advisors, such as accountants, lawyers and financial planners, to integrate their charitable interests into their estate plans. Examples of these gift vehicles are charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, charitable gift annuities, pooled income funds, bequests and gifts of retirement plans.

The Associate Director of Gift Planning is a front-line fundraising position at Tufts. The successful candidate will provide technical gift planning expertise, in conjunction with the school-based advancement staff, including prospect identification, cultivation, and solicitation. Working directly with donors and their attorneys/advisors, they will develop strategies and proposals (including financial illustrations) and present the materials in person when possible. The Associate Director will use Advance, University Advancement’s donor and alumni information management system/database to identify potential gift planning prospects and meet with them to introduce the idea of estate giving. She/he will steward existing gift planning donors and gifts as well as work with the members of the Charles Tufts Society, an honorary membership that recognizes those who have included Tufts in their estate plans. He/she will also develop educational sessions on gift planning for internal staff and volunteers. The Associate Director of Gift Planning position requires frequent travel on a local and national level to visit Tufts alumni, parents and friends.

Basic Requirements: Bachelor’s degree Minimum of three years of experience in gift planning or combined gift planning/development experience within higher education or other complex non-profit organizations Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) and familiarity with databases

Preferred Qualifications: Additional degree credentials are preferred (J.D., CPA, CFP, etc.). Familiarity with liberal arts undergraduate education, animal advocacy, and/or veterinary medicine is a plus. The selected candidate will possess the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Good judgment and the ability to build positive relationships with a wide variety of people is highly valued.

Special Work Schedule Requirements: This position has occasional work on early mornings, evenings, and weekends, particularly related to the travel required for the job.
