Associate Dean for Student Affairs

Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs occupies a leadership role working with senior administrative staff and faculty to advance the strategic goals of the School. He/she formulates, implements, evaluates, and revises policies and procedures related to all aspects of the student affairs operation at the School of International and Public Affairs. DUTIES: As part of the School's Executive Staff, advises the Dean and Senior Associate Dean, formulates, evaluates and revises administrative policies and procedures for the School on all aspects of its student affairs operation. These include student recruitment and retention, academic discipline, standards of academic progress, curriculum design, graduation requirements, career services, admissions and financial aid, etc. Has principal responsibility for enrollment management for SIPA; conducts tuition and enrollment analyses and assessments for use in setting long- and short-term admissions and tuition targets; follows and reports on trends in enrollment in similar institutions. As a member of the School's Admissions Committees, exercises oversight on all aspects of the School's yearly admissions process, involving approximately 2400 applications annually; determines eligibility for advanced standing. Oversees the School's registration and cross-registration operations. As Chair of the School's Fellowship Committee, evaluates over 900 current and incoming student fellowship applications annually; allocates approximately $5M in general income, gift, grant and endowment funds for fellowships and student officer appointments annually. Oversees the School's financial aid operation. Working closely with a team of five Assistant Deans and the appropriate staff in the PEPM, EMPA, PESP and Development Practice programs, advises a student population of approximately 1200 on course and program requirements, and cocurricular and student life issues, including housing options, graduation requirements, career choices, etc. Oversees the School's career services operation. Reviews extension and leave requests and certifies students for graduation; monitors academic compliance with School policies. Oversees the academic student disciplinary process and serves as the principal hearing officer for Dean's disciplinary procedures. Acts as liaison between SIPA and other university student services divisions, including the Registrar's Office, Student Financial Services, Health Services, the International Students and Scholars Office, Housing, Disabled Student Services, etc. Represents the School at meetings and on committees sponsored by these offices, resolving problems and staying current on changes in policies and practices. Oversees the School's records organization and retention processes.





Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Bachelor's degree required. Eight to ten years of related experience in student affairs in a higher education setting required.

 

Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications

Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills essential. Must have demonstrated leadership experience in higher education. Must have strong computer skills, including proficiency in spreadsheet programs and a thorough knowledge of Internet search strategies.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree strongly preferred. Prior experience with a computerized university student information system such as Student Information Systems (SIS) desirable. Familiarity with the fields of public policy and international affairs highly preferred.
